Megan Erie, 17, was in a terrible car accident with her friend this past Monday (5/14/18). Megan was airlifted to St Mary’s Hospital and is being treated for life-threatening injuries. Megan is in a coma at the moment with severe neck injuries, brain swelling, fractured skull, broken ribs and a lacerated spleen. She was in surgery to repair her spleen and responded to pain, which is a hopeful sign. This money you will be donating will help with Megan’s medical bills as well as help her family. Megan is such a beautiful soul and every time she went into a room it would light up. She and her family need your help while they are going on this long recovery journey. Your donations are greatly appreciated.

Megan has been diagnosed with a diffuse axonal injury (DAI) which is a type of brain injury which involves damages to the axons of her brain caused by shearing forces which have pushed the tissues of the brain past each other. The severity of her DAI was given a Grade 3.
There’s Grades 1-3, 3 is the worst.
Both sides of her brain have been effected but the left side of her brain is most effected- speech and communication center. She has damage to the left frontal and temporal lobes and scattered areas of the right side of her brain. The reason hers is more severe is because of how deep in the brain the damage is at.
She will go to a transition rehab facility in the near future for the next phase until she wakes up from her coma and can meet certain skills and commands, such as squeezing her hands on command, etc. She will then go to another rehab facility to learn skills and activities to be able to come home such as ADLs (activities of daily living) which will consist of every day tasks such as brushing her teeth and getting her muscles strong enough to get in and out of bed. She will be dependent on us from that time forward. There is a chance we won’t make it past the point where we are at right now and then again there is ALWAYS HOPE. When we asked the doctor to tell us where she thought Megan would end up with recovery on a scale from 0-10; 0 being perfect and 10 being a vegetative state she “thought” Megan is somewhere between 5-10. NOTHING is definitive until she wakes up-they can only speculate. She will be able to walk after physical therapy but she might not be able to talk and if so she will have a speech impediment. Typically with this diagnosis the people who wake up between 2-4 weeks after the trauma occurred present with the best outcomes.
There have been stories of people with more bleak outlooks than Megan’s - There can be miracles and she can have her own story to tell. This is the start of another chapter, our next journey. Moving forward for Megan and strong for our family. NEVER. LOSE. HOPE.

Update on Megan: No changes since my last update. Out of the highest danger for swelling peaks. She is still in a coma, on a ventilator, and getting medicine to keep her brain swelling down. Tomorrow they will take out the bolt that measures her brain pressure and she will have an MRI. Tuesday or Wednesday they will take out the ventilator, place a tracheotomy tube, and have the feeding tube relocated. Keeping the highest of hopes and surrounding her in Love

Megan has had a very busy day. Doctors found out that her C1 vertebrae is fractured, so she will be in a neck collar when she wakes up for 6 weeks. Her sacrum is fractured but will heal with time. Her eardrum ruptured. She had surgery to put mesh in her body to prevent blood clots from going to her lungs, brain, etc. After it all, the doctor had everything quiet so she could relax her brain. 72 hours is when the swelling will peak. She will still be in critical condition until Friday. Keep praying for Megan and her family as they are all going through this. Thank you so much for the donations so far, it’s really going to help.
