Hugh Royer III, his wife Heather, and their 4 children moved to Myrtle Beach, SC in 2007.  The Royers didn’t waste any time getting started. Hugh quickly opened up the Champions Golf Academy at the Long Bay Club, a Jack Nicklaus Signature Course.  Heather, a former sports agent, found her feet on the ground as a Golf Director with a local vacation rental company. Within just months of being in Myrtle Beach, both Hugh and Heather, became beloved members of the Myrtle Beach Golf Community.  That respect and appreciation hasn’t stopped to this day. Hugh is a former PGA Tour Player and Champion. His love for the game has not waivered as he continues to rejoin his friends on the Champions Tour. In the past couple of years, Hugh Royer III has battled through a series of medical issues that tried to derail his return to the tour golf scene.  Heather has become the ultimate member of the golf community over the past 12 years and she now holds a seat on the Board of Directors for Myrtle Beach Golf Holiday. Their children have grown quickly with the oldest living in Los Angeles, two in college chasing their passions, and one in high school who just turned 16 this past year. While at a glance everything seems great, little did the Royer’s know things were about to change.

Over the past 4 years Hugh has seen several doctors for various reasons regarding bumps that were popping up on his face.   As an instructor and player, Hugh spends much of his time outside, but not even the best personal maintenance and care can prevent the unimaginable from happening.  After seeing several doctors and receiving multiple diagnoses from allergies to just irritation from your sunglasses, the lump on the side of Hugh’s nose turned out to be Basal Cell Carcinoma.  Of all the types of cancer, the family remained positive as this is very treatable and should only be a surgery or two and then the healing can begin. On Thursday 26th of April the first surgery took place.  Hours into the surgery #TeamRoyer got the news that the doctors could not remove all of the cancer.  They felt that they got 75% of it, but the excellent surgeon stopped as the cancer grew deeper and deeper.  This level of surgery needed to be completed at MUSC in Charleston, SC. On Tuesday the 1st of May, Team Royer showed up at MUSC, spoke to the Doctors and everything seemed planned out and all of the parties were ready to beat this cancer.  The plan was to have one surgery to remove all of the cancer. Then 2-3 Weeks later, they would perform reconstructive surgery and then he would be back to chasing his dreams.   On Wednesday the 2nd of May, the surgery began.  After 6-7 hours in surgery, Team Royer got the news it didn’t want to hear.  The surgeons were unable to remove all of the cancer. The cancer had grown much deeper and much larger and had caused nerve damage.  More tests are scheduled to determine the best option on how to proceed. Possible solutions are radiation and more surgeries. Either way, Team Royer is going to need your help.

During this time Hugh has been out of work, Heather is doing the best she can to stay strong and to keep supporting the family.  Unfortunately Hugh does not have any medical insurance. The past 3 weeks, the Royers’ have received some help from friends and family to get through the month.  Unfortunately bills need to be paid, mortgages need to be paid, Abby (the 16 year old) needs to go to Driving School so she can have her license to attend school, medicine needs to be paid for, and groceries will need to be purchased.  Now that both Heather and Hugh have been out of work for 2 weeks and the Doctors are stating this is going to be at least a six month process #TeamRoyer needs your help. The community is doing everything it can, but it is just not enough.   Please help the Royer Family battle through this by donating today and joining #TeamRoyer.
