Everyone loves DAISY- road2recovery

My name is Jayne and I am setting this fund up to benefit the family of Daisy Santiago.

As many of you may know from the local news, a person was hit by a truck on Wednesday 11th April, while crossing the pedestrian walkway on Beverley Street, Duncan. The police are still waiting for witnesses to come forward and we plead for anyone who knows anything to please speak with the police.

That person was Daisy Santiago, mother of Diane, 20 and Dalton, 13 and long-term partner to Tom.

Daisy remains in a coma with extensive traumatic brain injuries.

Who is Miss Daisy?

I have known Daisy for the past 5 years through the long-term relationship of our young adult kids. We are the Mother-in-laws!!

Everyone loves Daisy, she is always smiling, laughing and just brings joy to people wherever she goes. She lights up a room.

Daisy is well known in Duncan, she worked at Walmart for 5 years and her line-ups were always long as she seems to know everyone,  she treats people as if you are her best friend and is always laughing.

She is a big part of the Filipino community on Vancouver Island and is well loved.

She is a fantastic baker and loves to feed you.

Her home is full of love and welcoming to all. She is selfless, always putting others first, a real salt of the earth person.

She loves to dance, sing, karaoke, geocache and enjoys family holidays with her siblings and their kids. She is a ray of sunshine.

Her biggest love is her family. She is so in love with Tom and is so proud of her kids, and so she should be, they are a credit to them both. Daisy had recently returned to work at Thrifty's and was so excited to be back, serving the customers with excellence, respect, laughter and fun.

The current situation

Daisy is currently on ICU in Victoria having suffered a traumatic brain injury, has undergone 2 brain surgeries and is still critical, this week will be very telling. All going well, she is expected to be in hospital for at least the next 4-6 months at best. At this point the medical staff cannot predict any outcomes or the long term consequences of this traumatic injury.

To date, Tom has spent every day at her bedside, sleeping on a chair in the visitors waiting room having to take indefinite time off work. Diane was living on the mainland, having just completed a course at BCIT and had just started a full-time job, for which she has had to give up to be with her mum and help take care of her young brother.

The plan is to rent accommodation in Victoria to be near to the hospital.

Tom is a rock, he is such a loving man,  respectful of everyone’s emotions, making sure all are ok and looked after. Diane and Dalton are missing their mum and desperate to hear her beautiful voice and laughter. Her parents and family are all keeping vigil via Skype in the Philippines. Her nephews and nieces are missing their Auntie, Tita Daisy and do not quite understand the seriousness of the matter; her brothers, sisters and Tom’s family have all been at her side.

Why I’m asking for help for the family

I have been living on Vancouver Island for 12 years and have known the Santiago and Brunt family for the past 5 years. They are the family I miss, full of love, acceptance, welcoming and fun.

I have been with the family since the accident and it breaks my heart to see their suffering. I have been on the other side as an ICU RN and I know from experience the trauma and emotional devastation this has on a family. Nobody likes to discuss the financial burden these events have on a family as their energy is needed to focus on each day at the bedside and the recovery of their loved one. However, in the real world the financial burden can cripple a family too, with loss of incomes and extra unexpected expenses, so please if you can, consider making a donation, however small to help relieve the added stress of financial worry.

Where your kind contributions will go

Initially the funds will help towards housing the family near to the hospital and we all know the cost of living in Victoria. Because we don’t know how long Daisy’s recovery is going to take and what it will look like, I am starting with a goal of $40,000.

We thank you for all your prayers and best wishes.

Please consider donating to this campaign, and sharing it with your friends and family on Facebook, email, Twitter and text message. Each share makes a real difference.

God Bless.
