Millie's Mission

Thank you for taking the time to look at our page. I will try and keep this as brief as possible, however, there is a lot to say.
In March 2016 I will be taking part in a Half Marathon and Millie (with the help of my fantastic parents) will be taking part in a Fun Run. Millie will be walking the fun run (which is just under a mile), in her splints, and will also have her wheelchair on stand by for when she needs it. She now has a self propelled wheelchair so, with the use of her one 'good' arm, will try to independently complete the run. This is a massive distance for Millie to cover and she will need constant support. This will also be the furthest distanced I have attempted to run, so I will need to do a lot of training!!!
Millie was born 6 weeks premature with Cerebral Palsy, right sided hemiplegia. She spent the first 6 weeks of her life in hospital. The Cerebral Palsy was caused when Millie suffered a stroke in the second trimester of pregnancy. This has caused Millie to have a whole range of difficulties including weakness in her right leg, arm and eye (she has very limited use of her right arm, and little/no sight in her right eye), weak core stability, learning difficulties, speech and language difficulties, and sleep problems. Millie needs constant assistance in all aspects of life such as feeding, bathing and dressing. Millie has become used to living with ongoing hospital appointments and therapies including: physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, Orthotics, Botox injections twice a year in her arm, Paediatric Consults, MRI scans, EEG Scans, Bobath intensive therapy, Speech and Language therapy and Ophthalmology appointments. Millie attends a Special Needs school which she enjoys very much and she has an Educational Statement. Millie looks forward to going to school every day.  As the years have progressed I have begun to realise that Millie desperately needs 1:1 support in order to help Millie achieve her full potential. At the moment Millie is on a 1:2 support, which doesn't sound far off, but in order for Millie to progress she really needs even more. I took it upon myself to try and teach Millie to read myself, and within 2 months she had 12 sounds and was beginning to read words. This was from having an intensive 1:1 session and the most she has progressed in her reading. Millie is also unable to write, draw or even hold a pencil correctly. This is where your money could really help us!!
Skybound Therapies can give Millie massive opportunties to progress. She would have 1:1 intensive ABA sessions for her reading with fantastic Registered Behaviour Technicians, be able to work with an Occupational Therapist who specialises in Handwriting, and also have access to a Speech and Language Therapist who is trained in Talk Tools, a therapy to assist those with Speech and Oral placement difficulties. I have decided to try and raise enough money to enable Millie to be able to receive 3 x 2 hour sessions a week. I'm really hoping to raise about £2000 to cover 6 months worth of therapy. I know this is a huge ask, but I'm going to do everything I can to ensure my daughter gets the opportunity she deserves to achieve her full potential. I believe that with this therapy Millie WILL be able to read and write, which will open up many more doors for her in the future. If you have anything, even 50p, even 10p, myself and Millie will be forever grateful to you.
Gem and Millie xx
