Emergency Laptop And Expenses Fund

I'm Alex Gabriel —I'm a writer on subjects like religion, social justice and culture, and also work in other corners of publishing like editing and translating other people's books, designing front covers and creating promotional merchandise. My blog Godlessness in Theory, where I write about subjects as diverse as religious abuse , mental illness , racism in geek culture , queer politics  and Doctor Who , has now been online two and a half years, and November was its busiest-ever month.

After being homeless most of September and October, I've been rudimentarily but stably housed, alone, for the last month, which allowed me to be more productive in November. While that's a huge relief, the details of where I am mean that I now rely on paying £18 for hotspot internet every five days, which makes a significant dent. In addition, seeking new  work means I'm facing the costs of travel and ordering legal documents, and relyin on tethering a few weeks back meant I got hit with a ridiculously large phone bill. (Imagine the most terrifyingly high one you can. Now double it. Now add a bit more.)

As a result of all of this, I'm in the red—not horrifyingly far into it, but further than is comfortable with ongoing living costs.

Here's the major thing though: on top of all the above, the laptop I bought many years ago as a student died a couple of months ago, having been on its last legs for over a year, slipping gradually away from life. Right now I'm reliant on a tablet, which, while a lifesaver, makes the process of publishing new posts far slower than it needs to be—and more importantly, means I can't do graphic design work, a large proportion of my income. The vicious cycle here is that until I do that kind of work again, I can't get a new laptop on my own. (I also have a number of longstanding jobs to finish this month.)

To cover the cost of a long-overdue replacement and possibly offset the other expensive aspects of being poor, I'm seeking to raise £1000 from people who feel like helping me and can afford to. (If that goal is met within the next week or two, I may extend it a fraction to cover the costs of fundraising and cushion me till January.)

If you can't contribute but do want to help out, please consider sharing this fundraiser online, or with specific people you know who might donate. If you can donate to this and want to, it means more than I can tell you.
