 SAN FRANCISCO, CA
"Our first port is San Francisco...and thence, I hardly know where."  —Herman Melville, 28 May 1860

San Francisco’s first marathon reading of Herman Melville’s Moby-Dick will be held on the 24th and 25th of October 2015, at The Firehouse in Fort Mason Center.

We are asking for donations to help secure the venue and cover other logistical costs.

Help us make this event a reality!

It may seem excessively optimistic (or, far worse, naïve) to expect a busy 21st-century San Franciscan to have any time for a 600-page, 160-year-old book about a whale. It may seem downright foolhardy to invite a few hundred people down to Fort Mason to read this crazy book aloud. But that's exactly what we're doing. This is the San Francisco Moby-Dick Marathon. We're going to begin at 12 noon, and read the whole thing aloud—all 600 pages, 135 chapters. Some people will bring visuals. Some will read in other languages. A few chapters will be performed as a play.

Check our web site to sign up to read ( http://sfmobydickmarathon.org/); you can donate there as well as here. There's been a whale siting but we're still at sea.

Many who are not familiar with Moby Dick know only about Ahab and his obsession with the white whale, but the book is FULL of DETAILS about the whaling industry, culture, history and all, including all the equipment on the ship and how clean and tidy it is kept between catches, at which time is is awash in blood and other bodily fluids, the whale oil being the most valuable and object of the hunt. SO MANY DETAILS, SO THOROUGH. Download a free reading at LibriVox.org (key "Moby Dick" into the search window).
