Raising money to have this pup named Kash after Johnny Cash trained as a service animal for a wonderful young man Kooper...
Kooper is 11 years old with a birthday coming up on Valentine’s Day, along with his twin sister Kenedy. Kooper was born twin B, or second to Kenedy, at 29 weeks and 3 days, almost 3 months early. He was immediately admitted to the NICU and put on a ventilator, weight only 2llbs and 10oz and 15in long. Surprisingly enough he came off of the ventilator and was able to breathe room air after only 2 days. When Kooper was about 1 ½ months old he developed RSV while weighing about 3lbs. He was then placed back on a ventilator for approximately 2 ½ weeks. This is when the Dr’s believe he suffered the brunt of the loss of his oxygen to his brain, resulting in brain damage. It wasn’t until around 2 years old that he had his MRI of his brain and was diagnosed with brain damage. Kooper’s primary diagnosis is Periventricular Leukomalacia (PVL) with a second and third diagnosis of Cerebral Palsy and mild to moderate developmental delay. He was already in several types of therapies which have continued to present day. At 2 ½ years Kooper developed an extreme case of bilateral pneumonia, at which time the D’rs discovered he was aspirating, or breathing, his food into his lungs. He was then diagnosed with Chronic Lung Disease and left the hospital with a G-tube (feeding tube). He was able to have the G-tube removed when he was 6years old. A few years ago, he was running a high fever which resulted in his first seizure. Only later did we find out that as a child with PVL gets older, seizures are usually part of the deal. While he has had several Grand Mal Seizures, he primarily suffers from silent seizures. This has resulted in a cocktail of very heavy medications to keep his seizures at bay. Kooper has had many obstacles to overcome, including his schooling. He attends a public school where he is in special education classes and receives speech and occupational therapy. With his disability he has trouble with learning which keeps him behind in his general education compared to other kids his age. Also, his motor skills are slightly behind, but does not keep him from playing t-ball or basketball. He loves to watch all ports and it doesn’t matter the team, he just loves it when they score. Along with his disabilities he has anxiety and behavioral problems. He takes medications to help, but they don’t always work. Sometimes he has a hard time with being able to calm down once he gets upset, which have lasted up to an hour or more. Having a service dog could really benefit Kooper in the areas of, altering us when he has a seizure, or helping to calm him down when he is upset, feeling frustrated or over stimulated, urging him to go to the restroom so he doesn’t have an accident, and also helping him with his balance when needed. Every penny helps, so please find it in your heart to help us help Kooper.
