50 Bills in 50 States
You can learn more about this project here:
2016 has been pretty freaking terrible. For a lot of reasons. One of the worst reasons is that the work to remove conversion therapy abuse of LGBT youth is on the verge of moving many steps backward. And that's why I'm starting this campaign.
GOAL: To make 2017 the year that every single state in the country submits a bill to protect LGBT youth from conversion therapy.
You may have heard that Vice President-elect Pence supports conversion therapy. He does. You may have heard that Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos supports conversion therapy. She does. You might have heard that... oh, you get the picture. Needless to say the battle to protect LGBT youth from conversion therapy just got a LOT harder.
But you can help. For December, rather than a holiday gift I am imploring you to join me as I start a national campaign to submit a conversion therapy bill in EVERY state. Yes, all 50.
We are aiming for $5,000. That's $100 per state.
These funds will be used to: A website to coordinate the efforts, a video capturing the effort to protect LGBT youth in every state, printed materials for every state to start the legislation, a travel budget to visit states as needed to submit each bill, and a mental health budget to support survivors who help us start this work.
This won't be easy. I will probably lose a lot of sleep over this. BUT I guarantee that the reward of seeing every single state submit a bill to end conversion therapy will be the greatest day of my life. THANK YOU for joining me.
Hundreds of you donated what you could and together in less than a week we raised $10,000 to protect LGBT youth from conversion therapy. $10,000!
The website is drafted and will be coming online soon. The graphic designers are prepping our logo and initial graphics. Photographers are planning to capture the stories and work of each state. Cinematographers are beginning to create the outline for a video production of our work. Ambassadors in states are clamoring to get started. The legal team is prepping for deadlines.
It's overwhelming. And it's amazing.
THANK YOU to each of you. The website will have a chance to continue to donate and to volunteer and together we will make this happen.
Know that the format of this work could change in each state. We will empower those on the ground to be successful at starting the conversation in their state on protecting LGBT youth from conversion therapy. #BornPerfect and the National Center for Lesbian Rights will be at our side each step of the way to continue their FOUNDATIONAL work in this area. And you'll be there.
I don't have words to describe how happy I am so I'll use a survivors message to me instead.
"I've never seen such a physical representation of those who have never experienced the pain of conversion therapy doing so much to end it. We truly aren't alone in this fight."
We aren't alone. We already won the first battle. $10,000 in less than a week.
I'm truly hoping this may be my 2nd to last update. I started this campaign at roughly 8 PM last Thursday and want it to be met by 8 PM tomorrow. We have $495 left and my final goal is met.
We will have raised $10,000 for ending conversion therapy in 1 week. That's beyond astounding. That's almost miraculous.
THANK YOU to those who've given. We are so close. So close. I couldn't have done this without you. Every single dollar helped. THANK YOU.
It's Tuesday and I'll call it #TellTwoFriendsTuesday. Please, please, please help us finish that last $900. We can do this. In less than a week.
Tell two friends personally about this project. Do it now.
I'm still in the planning stages for this work and can't wait to see the tactics we use to have a unified voice against conversion therapy. Know that each of you are bringing something special to the table through money, time, connections, and more. THANK YOU.
Oh, and I got a call from a donor who wished to remain anonymous for $500 in honor of all of this amazing first weekend. "There is not a chance we won't hit $10,000" she said.
Share the message, tell a friend, be ready for our volunteer page on the website where you'll each find a way to get involved. And... THANK YOU.
146 Donors. 4 Days, $8,490.
