On the morning of Wednesday January 3, 2018 our 69 year old neighbor James (Jim) was brutally assaulted, robbed, and carjacked. While warming up his car to take his wife to the bank, a group of six teenagers jumped out of an SUV and threw Jim onto the street. He was fully cooperative and gave the attackers his wallet and car keys, yet they still viciously beat him. As they fled the scene, the assailants proceeded to run Jim over with his own car, crushing his hips. Shortly thereafter a neighbor across the street found Jim on the curb and brought him a blanket, while another called 911. Thankfully, the police were able to locate and apprehended the attackers. It is my understanding that the charges could include (but are not limited to) attempted murder. Jim was taken to Shock Trauma Medical Center and underwent surgery/ treatment for multiple fractures in his pelvic bone, internal bleeding, and multiple contusions. Jim will be in the hospital, and then in a rehab facility for approximately 6 weeks. It is uncertain when Jim will be able to walk again, let alone work. This could have happened to any of us. Jim and his wife Barbara are the sweetest neighbors and friends that we could ask for. They have very limited family in Maryland, and they did not deserve for this to happen to them. Jim obviously will not be returning to work anytime soon and he is the sole provider for their home. It is our goal to help alleviate some of the financial burden caused by this horrific incident.

Hello everyone. Just a quick update, I spoke with Jim’s wife Barbara last night, and they received some pretty disheartening news yesterday. The surgeon who performed Jim’s surgery the day of the incident re-evaluated him yesterday. It appears that due to his age Jim is not healing as quickly as we had hoped. He remains in good spirits, but is still looking at another 5 months at the rehabilitation facility:(. Please continue to share this link as they need all of the help they can get at this time!

Hello everyone! Just a little update, and a Thank You message from Jim’s family... I saw Jim’s wife and his sister this evening, they had just returned from watching the football game with Jim in the dining hall of the rehabilitation facility. He will be receiving inpatient rehabilitation for another 3-6 months, in order to be able to walk again. Despite all that he has been through, Jim remains in good spirits.
Jim’s wife gave me a note, and asked that I please share it with everyone, it reads:
“We would like to express our heart filled gratitude and appreciation for all of your prayers, well-wishes, and monetary donations for Jim. It is so great to know that there are still lovely people in this world. Everyone of you have been wonderful contributing to Jim. There aren’t words to express all of the thankfulness that our hearts hold for all of you.
Thank you dearly,
The Family of Jim “

Thank you so very much for the continued donations, I’m overwhelmed by everyones generosity! Jim has just been transported to a different hospital where he will begin rehabilitation in order to be able to walk again. Jim’s wife informed me that he will likely be in in-patient rehabilitation for 3-6 months That being said I have no idea how much our goal should be, but it seems as though it’s going to take some time for life to resemble anything close to normal again for this sweet couple. I know that life isn’t always fair, but this is so senseless and disheartening. Keep sharing this link and keep the prayers and support coming! Thank you!

Thank you so very much for the continued donations, prayers, and support! Also I would like to thank all of the friends and neighbors who have been helping get Barb to and from the hospital. I was able to visit Jim over the weekend and his spirits were good. He is grateful to be alive, and hopeful for a speedy recovery. I can’t say that I would be as graceful in this situation, I would be angry, really angry. As for his physical condition, he is stable; but he still has a long road ahead. Please continue to share the link to this page so that we can help ease their burden as much as possible. Thank you again!
