About me:
My name is Dilshad Begum. I am from a small village in Gilgit, a beautiful mountainous town in Pakistan. I come from a very humble, hardworking family.  My father is a farmer. Even though we have very little, one thing my father believes is in education, and so I was able to go to school in Ghulkin, Gilgit and with a grant from IKEA Foundation was able to do my undergrad at the Asian University for Women (AUW).

Please help pay my tuition fees:
I need to raise funds to do my master’s degree. I got selected for the master’s program in 'International Education and Development' at the University of Sussex.  The program begins in September 2018 and will be for just one year. I have tried to get scholarships but have not been successful and hence I am requesting to you directly to please help me.
I need to raise the funds by August 01, to pay the tuition fees and apply for my visa, which is guaranteed once the fees are paid and I show that I have my living expenses covered. This is will be a dream come true if I am able to study at Sussex University, plus this program has been ranked #1. I would like to thank you in advance as I know you will do your best to help me achieve my goal, to be an educator in Pakistan and help many young girls like myself to dream big.

Education is my passion:
I have been passionate about education from an early age. During my high school and university summer vacations, I have volunteered to teach at the community schools in Gilgit Baltistan (2010- 2013). I also have held career counseling sessions (2014) for more than 150 students at the Al Amin Model School Gilgit where I contributed to the education of my community children.

Teaching at the community school (Nasir Khisro Model Academy School), 2013.

During my university years, I have been a part of AUW, Ford research study, which focused on Women Empowerment through education, employment and the impact of both on women’s lives. I had done 80 surveys in Islamabad/Rawalpindi. I had the opportunity to meet people from different socioeconomic backgrounds in Pakistan and discuss the problems they faced with regards to education. I spent time listening to the stories of women and how education has made a difference in their lives and their families. I also participated in analyzing the data and coming up with possible solutions for challenges in the area of women’s education including representation of fieldwork experiences in research seminars.

I want to contribute to the quality of education to girls like me and every child in my community. Gilgit has a moderate literacy rate, but the quality of education is not good enough for graduates to qualify to get into good universities or find desirable jobs Reason being the education system is so old with focus on rote learning and ineffective teaching methods. Hence the students lack important competencies that are necessary for today’s job market and the challenges that lay ahead. My goal is to make a difference in the Education system of Gilgit so that the education they receive can change their life for the better, which I plan to do once I complete my master’s degree.

Currently I am working in the Aga Khan - Examination Board (AKU-EB) as an associate Curriculum Development. I worked for a year as a management intern in the Teacher Development Group of the AKU-EB. This examination board is unique in Pakistan as it not only gives school leaving examinations that test higher-order thinking skills but focuses on teacher training and provides support for schools and school leadership. Working here, I am learning and expanding my knowledge about the educational system of Pakistan. I have the opportunity to gain hands-on experience by being involved in developing teacher training, and then to engage by visiting schools and participating in the training of teachers. I also have the opportunity to work with specialists on syllabi development which gives me a broader perspective of the education system in Pakistan.

The master’s degree will be help me improve my knowledge this field, so when I finish in a year I will be ready to use my experience and learning to improve the education system in my hometown of Gilgat by introducing modern learning methodologies which will have a huge impact on how the students learn.
