Hi Friends,
I am creating this gofundme page for one of my friend who was a victim to a horrifying IRS phone scam last week.
Through her story I want to spread awareness of the scamsters during this tax period and spread the message to safe guard and protect yourself from such incidents.
My friend's story:
This happened on April 5th, Tuesday. My friend received a call in the afternoon. The caller initiated a call from a 911 number, followed by calls from [phone redacted], this is a IRS new toll free number to assist Tax Payers for Electronic federal tax payment system hotline
And later followed up by calls from Santa Clara police department- (408) [phone redacted]. My friend had to speak to about 10 people on phone during the scam call. All of them with an American accent.
They used all legitimate numbers to display on the cell phone so that you feel they are coming from authorized people trying to reach you.
They informed my friend that there is a federal tax difference on her file and that she needs to make a payment immediately otherwise an arrest warrant will be issued with the state police. She has just filed her 2015 taxes that morning on 5th April hence the call and timing seemed to be legitimate.
She was asked to make these trasaction through money gram center which is government certified. There were about 8 transaction she made to "Andy Silva" in "Colorado" for about $16,000, each transaction for about $1800-$2550.
The next day when she reached out to Santa Clara police department to check on her file regarding the tax difference she paid the previous day, the police department informed her that they did not contact her and it was a scam that she had fallen prey to.
Due to this scam, my friend is in a great loss financially and emotionally and needs help.
Through this fund raiser I want to create awareness among innocent people out there so that they don't fall prey to such scams especially during the peak time of tax season.
