Hello everyone.. My name is Thomas Biniek Jr. and most of my peers know me as "Beans". I am a self employed Professional Bowler with a beautiful wife, daughter and two step-daughters. I just turned 40 years old on September 15th and I have been working since I was 12 years old so it is really hard for me to ask other people for help. Especially financially... Here is my story!!!
I have always been an athletic person starting at a very young age. Baseball, football and then bowling. I participated heavily in all 3 but bowling was a sport I knew I was good at and I would be able to do it my entire life so I stuck with it and became a PBA member at the age of 27.. I have dedicated my life to bowling as it has given me my wife, my job and the ability to help others in ways such as coaching and knowledge I pass on to my customers.. At the age of 20 years old I developed a small lesion of dry skin on my left forearm and I wasn't too concerned about it but it turned out to be Psoriasis. The Psoriasis totally ravaged my body in the next 5 years to where my body is over 35% covered with this disease.. My appearance hasn't really ever been a problem because I have a very strong possitive attitude and I was ok with it. I used to say, "Better me than someone this appearance would ruin their lives!" Anyways, the problem is that I was lucky enough to win the 1 in 6 people with Psoriasis develop Psoriatic Arthritis to go with it. The Arthritis over a 5-6 year period totally destroyed the joints in my fingers to create horrible pain and deformity. After the pain and deterioration subsided I regained use of my finger and flexibility to the point I could bowl again after a 3 year layoff due to the pain. At the time I was paying $480 a month for medical insurance and it would only cover my medication 80%. My Psoriaisis medication was over $2500 a month so do the math.. $480 + $500 = nearly $1000 per month for just my insurance and medication. I was able to pay for it for about 6 months but the financial burden was too much and I was dropped by my insurance company for non payment. For over 10 years I have been uninsured medically and I was lucky enough to stay pretty healthy. Over the last 5 years being self employed I have tried to apply for medical insurance on 3 different occasions only to be denied due to my Psoriatic condition and I remained uninsured. In January of 2013 I was in Detroit participating in a PBA event when the biggest fear of any professional athlete occured. INJURY! My wrist failed me and I was forced to withdraw from the event. Bowling on the national PBA tour has been a lifelong dream of mine since I was 9 years old.. At 39 I finally had the chance to compete and I did well against the Best bowlers in the world!!. I rested my wrist for 4 months thinking it was just fatigued but it did not get any better. I required surgery to repair a torn TFCC ligament that fialed due to my arthritic condition. The surgery was performed by Dr. Randall Culp from the Philadelphia Hand Center at Jefferson Methodist Hospital. It was a success but I am required to pay for this surgery out of pocket. The hospital and Dr. Culp has done everything they could to help me through this financially. A $35,000 surgery was only billed to me for $8,102.00. A huge discount but I can not afford to pay for the surgery. In the mean time I have developed another issue with my wrist that will require an additional surgery on October 25th or I run the risk of forever losing the use of my right hand. This also a result of the Arthritic condition and the inability to afford the medication required. I hate to ask everyone for help but this is my last resort as I can not get medical insurance unless I qualify for Obamacare but I still need to pay for the first surgery first. Any help you can provide for myself and my family will be helpful far more than you can ever imagine. We will be forever thankful. Any and all donations will go 100% directly towards my medical bills and any excess above my medical debt will be donated to the National Psoriasis Foundation.. Thank you so much from the bottom of my heart... Beans
