Leslie’s cancer journey

Update:
From the Northam family to yours, we want to thank you from the bottom of our hearts for the tremendous outpouring of love and support we have received! You all are truly incredible and we cannot thank you enough!

Leslie’s story has been quite the roller-coaster ride with its many peaks and valleys. She has been an inspiring influence to so many people with her selflessness, her compassion, and her love for everyone she came in contact with. We are lucky enough that she deemed us worthy of hearing of her story, in her own words and we’d like the world to know what a brave fighter she is. Please share her story with everyone you can, we hope that her legacy will inspire the world to be more like her.

Funeral Services have been arranged for Saturday, April 27th at 11am at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints; 500 S 50 W, Kaysville, UT 84037. We invite everyone that would like to join us in celebrating the life of our New Angel.

Cancer is evil and it does not discriminate, cancer has taken the lives of many and the livelihoods of those left behind. Please donate what you can as this family that has been through so much will have to relive it all again in medical and funeral expenses. Please reach out in your communities and find a person or family that has needs but can’t ask. Please be loving of your neighbors, be kind to passersby, smile at the stranger in the store. The best way to remember Leslie would be to live as she did, everyone that she came into contact with left her with a smile on their face. Please do the same and love one another.

Our sweet Leslie Ruth Kahealani Downs Northam of 43 years has left this earth to join her Heavenly Father, her daughter, her Father and her Brother in heaven. She has been battling this wicked and evil Cancer for 11 months. She has beaten so many odds of survival, but it is now time for her to rest after this long journey. She has touched so many people around this nation, state and especially in our local community with her testimony, blogs and compassion for others. With all trials she has endured, she still looked after others and their wellbeing and spiritual growth. She has inspired us to be better people and to come closer to our Father in Heaven and to be with him again someday. She has made us more enriched with love for our Savior and others. We will truly miss this wonderful woman who is a Daughter, Wife, Mother, Sister, Grandmother, Aunt and friend to many. She is survived by her Husband, 2 daughters, grandson and future granddaughter. “Leslie my love, we will be together again someday. Please watch over and keep us safe. We love you with all our hearts. This is not Goodbye, but until we meet again.”

I want to tell you about a very dear friend of mine, her name is Leslie Northam.  She has always been such a caring, loving, giving and high-spirited person. She is the type of person that you can’t help but want to be around her.  The love and overall positivity is contagious! Those characteristics are not only her but her amazing family as well!  I cannot describe it, they have an open heart for anyone and everyone that comes into their lives!  I am amazed every day by them and wonder how am I so lucky to have met all these wonderful people.

Leslie and her family have had some very rough trials thrown at them recently.  My wonderful friend was diagnosed with Stage 4 Carcinosarcoma on July 5, 2018.  This diagnosis has come on very suddenly and has thrown her family into a whirlwind at the aggressiveness and speed of this Cancer.  To put everything in perspective of how fast this has progressed, here is a timeline:

·       April 25th – Finished Nursing School
·       May 9th – Received diagnosis of Cancer but no specifics as to what type
·       May 18th – Graduated from Nursing School
·       May 21st – First appointment with Gynecology Oncologist
o   Doctor felt very positive that this has been caught early and the Cancer was well contained in the uterus.
·       May 22nd – Took Nursing Licensing Boards
·       June 7th – Radical Hysterectomy Surgery
·       June 8th – Learned that her Cancer was Stage 3 Carcinosarcoma, a rather aggressive and rare cancer.
·       July 3rd – Met for the first time with Medical Oncologist to go over treatment plan for Chemo and likely radiation.
·       July 4th – Admitted into hospital for infection and fluid in the abdomen
·       July 5th – Had a paracentesis that pulled 2.4 liters of fluid from her abdomen that was pressing on her stomach and lungs making it difficult to eat and breathe.
o   Fluid tested positive for Malignant Ascitic Fluid, meaning the cancer had spread to the Omentin (layer covering the bowel).
o   This meant her Cancer had progressed to Stage 4!  There is no Stage 5.
·       July 7th – Kidneys begin to shutdown
·       July 10th – Organs are beginning to shut down.  Doctors at a loss what to do next and begin discussing end of life treatment.
·       July 11th – Miracle happens, organs are working, kidneys are improving!

Today, Leslie has begun her Chemotherapy treatment.  The Cancer tumors are still producing malignant fluid in her abdomen.  She is having to get a Paracentesis at least once a week to help so that she is able to breathe.  Each time she has one, they continue to draw more fluid out.  This journey has been very tough for her and her family with needing to take time off of work to get her to her appointments and not to mention the cost of everything is starting to take a toll on her family.  Despite all of this, Leslie is a warrior, she is so brave and strong and is hopeful that she will kick this Cancer’s butt! My heart breaks to see the daily struggles they are going through. I am at a loss of how to help them.  We have created this Go Fund me to help take some financial stress off of this family and help them focus on Leslie’s health.  If you could help this wonderful family by donating, we would greatly appreciate it!  Any amount goes a long way!

Leslie has also created a Facebook Page documenting her journey.  It is a way to help her release her feelings and thoughts.  Below is the link to her page if you would like to follow that journey.  Thank you and God Bless!
