Denise's Emergency Services Fund

Donation protected
My name is Renee Lagloire and Denise was my very best friend as well as a lifelong friend from high school. After Denise's death, it took a while for me to even grasp what had happened, but now that it has been two weeks I feel the urgent need to do something in her memory that she would be proud of and that would also help others, because as we all know that is what Denise was about...

Denise Elliott tragically died on February 22, 2016 in an ambulance on the way from her home in San Bartolo to the hospital in La Paz, BCS, Mexico. It is not for us to know if Denise would have survived if the response time had been quicker, if the ambulance had been better equipped or the emergency team had been better trained. It is understood that an improvement in all of these important components of San Bartolos’s emergency service certainly would have helped. To honor her memory, The Denise Fund will kick start the effort to improve the emergency medical services of San Bartolo, Baja California Sur, Mexico, the village that Denise loved, and where she had made her home and her cooking school Buen Provecho. Please make a contribution in Denise’s memory that will be used for the following emergency medical provisions.

Equipment: We will seek donations of equipment (gurneys, larger oxygen tanks, defibrillator, etc.) through local clinics and social organizations. The Denise Fund will fill small gaps with other needed emergency medical supplies and equipment so that the San Bartolo ambulance is adequately equipped.

Gasoline and ambulance maintenance: The municipality’s budget for gasoline for the ambulance is not sufficient for the need, so sometimes the ambulance’s gas tank is on empty when an emergency call is received. The Denise Fund will be an emergency gasoline fund, and will also pay for basic maintenance of the ambulance (oil changes, tires, etc.). The Denise Fund will buy portable gasoline tanks, which will be kept full, for emergency situations and re-filled after every use.

Volunteer ambulance driver: Currently there is only one ambulance driver in the village. Others need to be recruited and trained. The Denise Fund will pay for volunteers’ out-of-pocket expenses (gasoline and food) for the training (which will be provided pro bono). These voluntary drivers sometimes receive tips as compensation for their service from the families who receive ambulance services. To supplement, The Denise Fund will provide money for food for the driver, once they reach La Paz or Cabo San Lucas (an adrenaline-filled hour away). As more drivers are trained, we will also explore the use of walkie-talkies to improve communication among drivers and therefore improve response time.

Emergency Response Volunteer: The San Bartolo emergency response team currently consists of one person, the ambulance driver, who cannot provide medical care while driving. Other volunteers need to be recruited and trained. The training can be obtained without cost, and The Denise Fund will pay for volunteers’ out of pocket expenses such as gasoline and meals, and materials as needed. Until this happens, the local doctor in private practice may be hired to accompany the patients in emergencies. In this case, The Denise Fund will ensure the doctor’s fee is fully covered, and will pay for needed oxygen and necessary medicines.

I would be very grateful for your donations,  however big or small as it will allow many to honor her memory and be able to build something positive as a result of her leaving us way too soon.

All the best,

Renee Lagloire
