Arionna "Onna" Matteson

Arionna’s Story
On Friday, September 29th an accident/incident occurred resulting in Arionna "Onna" sustaining severe burns.

Onna was flown via life flight, from the Menahga football field, to Hennepin County Trauma Center (HCMC) and was admitted to the burn unit.

Onna was awake and alert from the time of the incident up until the emergency unit at HCMC, where the emergency burn team intubated her and gave her sedation medication to relieve her of the pain. Onna was then placed into a medically induced coma.

Upon evaluation Onna was found to have severe burns on at least 75% of her body. As burns go, they can get worse in the first 36 hours, Onna was reevaluated and they were assessed as 3rd degree.

Onna was on life support for the first few days due to her heart racing and her blood pressure dropping. Onna was kept "comfortable" throughout the weekend.

On Monday, October 3rd Onna was brought into the operating room for surgery. During her 4.5 hour surgery, the surgeons worked on cleaning up the burns and they removed the burnt skin from Onna's legs, shoulders, and torso (back, chest, abdomen). The surgeons placed integra (shark skin) on the places they cleaned up and that will act as a barrier to her open wounds as the skin underneath tries to regrow (it will not stay on her). Arionna was able to rest peacefully throughout the night.

On Tuesday, October 3rd our stubborn girl was a bit uncomfortable and agitated. During a linen change she pulled her tubes from her mouth. Her nurse and 2 nursing assistants were with her and they paged for the medical team. They were able to re-intubate her and help her to be more comfortable with medication. She has been stable and resting peacefully ever since.

Journal entry by Jennifer Phillips

Yesterday the nurses put on two of Onna's favorite songs and she was wiggling her foot and mouthing the words to sing along (she is unable to sing or talk but her lips were moving to the music) after that the nurses gave Onna some more sedation medication because she was up all night, they think that she is having dreams (which is normal and they said this is about the time she will be having them.). During her dressing change yesterday they found two hematomas (like big blood blisters) on her left arm and hand, they are keeping a close eye on those. Drake and Skye came down yesterday for Drakes follow up, Drake was seen by his doctor and they said he is healing very well, his burns should be healed in the next week or two. Drake and Skye did see Onna, they did very well given the circumstances and they keep asking to go see her throughout the day. So we make lots of trips with them to see her :). Today Arionna went into surgery at 0730, at 1230 she was brought back to her room and we were able to go see her. Very hard time for us because the surgeons worked on her neck and her face so they have her covered in a thick gauze, where only her eyes, nose and mouth are showing and they had to staple her dressing to her poor lil face. we are having a hard time with seeing her like this because we know it has to be more painful, however the nurses and doctors have decided to keep her sedated and medically paralyzed for the next few days. The surgeons put in her tracheostomy tube, so they want to make sure that has time to seat before they wake her up again. The surgeon stated that they had to do more than they expected on her face and neck but she is doing well and did very well during the surgery, she stayed stable, and was given a unit and half of blood during the surgery. The doctors and nurses told us from the start that this is going to be a long road and we will be making progress but during the progress we will be taking 10 steps forward and sometimes 12 backwards. This is the time its going to be up and downs, and we will be going forward with some steps back.

We want to extend a huge thank you to all for the thoughts, prayers and support. We would not be able to stay so strong without all of you, and once Onna is able to be awake she will need the support more than anything, its going to be a tough road for our little fighter.
