As of today, our Father is still in the Cardiology Critical Care Unit at Southlake hospital here in Ontario but not without a heck of a journey getting out of Mexico. Our father collapsed with heart failure on February 11th in the lobby of their hotel in Mexico 2 days into their trip. Thankfully there were EMS people checking in that quickly went to our Dads aid. He never had a pulse so CPR was administered and defibrillator used, 8 ribs were fractured.  Receiving that call from our Mom on Monday afternoon was terrifying. Three of the four kids flew down on Tuesday morning to get our Dad out of Mexico as quickly and as safely as possible along with our Mother while the eldest brother stayed back to coordinate the very expensive Air Ambulance home.

From the time he collapsed to today, our parents have been completely wiped out of all their life savings. They understood the risk of traveling without insurance, but they took the leap and opted to not pay the $4,000 travel insurance. What we're learning today is it probably would not have mattered anyway due to the fact that it was a pre-existing condition. So we are now on a mission to share our story so that others will pay attention to the policy they have purchased (read the fine print!)

For everyone that is wondering how our Dad is, we just found out he is a candidate to receive an ICD Defibrillator on Monday and it so happens to be his Birthday as well!  He will remain in the hospital for 2 to 3 weeks in rehabilitation however, he will have a long road to recovery both physically and financially.
