Charles Uehrke - Open Heart Warrior

In early February our friend and colleague Charles Uehrke traveled to Barcelona, Spain for a vacation with friends and family. Two days into his trip, Charles was hospitalized with a cardiac condition which ultimately required open heart surgery. The initial valve replacement surgery was followed by complications, so ultimately Charles underwent a second surgery and received a heart transplant.

The good news is that Charles is one tough cookie and his new heart is beating fine! Charles has been recovering in Spain and the doctors are extremely optimistic he will return to a normal life in a few months' time. We can’t wait to see him back in the Bay Area among his friends and his colleagues in the design community of which he has been such an integral part.

For the time being, Charles is not able to receive emails, but please feel free to leave comments here for him to read when he is able to do so.

Charles’ partner Joel, his sister Susan, and his close friends Jill and John have been at his side through this traumatic period, both before and after the surgeries. We can only imagine the complexity of managing a health emergency in a foreign country, the stress of undergoing many tests and procedures, and mostly the uncertainty and fear that comes with such a serious medical condition. Thankfully, the quality of care and facilities in Spain are excellent and Charles has been in very good hands the whole time. Of course his recovery won’t be easy or quick, and the focus now is on getting Charles healthy enough for a return to the U.S.

Like anyone in Charles' circumstances, he will need some help from his friends to get back on his feet. This fund has been set up in support of the medical adjustments Charles is now faced with, as well as the financial challenges accompanied with receiving emergency surgery in another country. Undergoing and recovering from heart surgery is tough enough, so we hope that collectively we can at least help to ease the financial burden of his recovery.

Charles has influenced, connected with, and is loved by so many people, and we are trying to find ways for everyone to help. Please share these links with anyone who knows Charles. Any donation, however small, will be a great help to our open heart warrior! Huntsman AG will match donations made by our employees up to a total of $10,000.00.

Please keep Charles in your thoughts and we will update you all as soon as we know more.

Sincerely,
Charles' friends at Huntsman Architectural Group
