Save the Strays of Baja

We are Terry & Heidi Kotas originally from Washington State and have been living on Mexico's Baja Peninsula since our retirement in 2009. While we have enjoyed living here, there is one dark spot: the heart wrenching feeling when you see stray, unfed and uncared for dogs and cats and you alone can't take care of or help them all. We have always tried to help by feeding those we could or trying to find homes for others. We took in our 'rescue cat' Rosie in 2010. While in Loreto we met a veterinarian named Dassia (Dassia Y Lopez of Patas y Pies Veterinary clinic) that does tremendous work taking in strays and caring for them all out of her own pocket. She has a huge heart but due to the overwhelming number of homeless cats and dogs that she not only feeds and houses but provides all of their medical care including spaying and neutering -- it puts a huge strain on her resources, and she never complains. We, along with other community members, try to help her out with donations of food for the animals and money but we see that more will be needed to sustain caring for these dogs and cats as well as embarking on much needed Trap/Neuter/Release projects. We are hoping all of our critter loving friends can spare a few dollars to help Dassia continue the good work she is doing. Thank you ❤️

We just got kitty #11 in to our wonderful vet Dassia who is neutering and vaccinating all these little sweethearts.

This last one is young (3-4 months) and was brought to us with no need to capture it. She rode in the car on my lap purring and talking the whole way! We are hoping to find a home for her right away as she would make a purrrrrfect house (or boat) cat.

Our capture/neuter/release program is going well here at Puerto Escondido — we think we’re about 1/2 way through the current population.

Thank you to everyone that has donated through this Go Fund Me page as well as in person donations of equipment (traps, carriers and food) and cash for Dassia to cover the time and supplies she so lovingly gives to the kitties.

July 2017

Had a meeting last night with a couple who have done lots of TNR work with cats in the nearby Nopolo area - we got lots of great information and we plan to do the TNR at the boatyard in Puerto Escondido at the end of October. Wish we could do it sooner before more kittens are born, but they are leaving for a short trip to the States next week and we will be driving north shortly after that -- so just not enough time right now.

In the meantime we will use the donations received to help Dassia buy food and supplies for the many dogs and cats she shelters as well as the sutures and anesthesia that she'll need for the spaying and neutering in October.

August 2017

Before we left Puerto Escondido we took the money from the GoFundMe account along with other generous donations given to us directly by friends and we matched those funds and delivered 6000 pesos (approx $300 US) to Dassia to purchase supplies (sutures, anesthesia, etc) for the end of October TNR for the boatyard cats in Puerto Escondido.

When we are in the States we'll buy another trap to help speed the process up once we get it going. And we found a couple that will continue feeding the boatyard cats in our absence -- if they are fed in the same area fairly regularly it should make the trapping go quicker and easier when the time comes.

Thanks to everyone that has donated to the cause or spread the word! And a special thanks to Dassia, without her none of this would be possible.
