Defective Firework Injures Mom&Baby
On Saturday July 1st, 2017, around 9:30 pm Maggie, Aria and their family attended a annual family firework show. Approximately 3 quarters into the show an unknown defective firework box was lit with 16 cannons, and the first shot forever changed a families life. As Maggie and her 4 week old infant enjoyed the show that one cannon took an unexpected turn directly towards her and her baby. Sitting 50+ yards away from where fireworks were being lit off. As quickly as the firework took place in Maggie's lap she thought even quicker to remove her child from her lap and tossed her onto the blanket as the firework exploded in her lap. Causing her to catch on fire with serious injuries. Maggie was taken by ambulance and baby was air lifted, both taken to The University of Iowa hospital. Mother was taken into emergency surgery and baby was put into the burn unit. As of this morning Maggie is going in for her second surgery and baby Aria is going in for her first surgery. Maggie suffers severe trauma to both legs, and will need multiple surgeries. Aria is suffering with broken femur, multiple fractures, and burns. We have started this go fun me page to support this family during this tragic time. Any money donated will be spent towards bills, and living expenses since Maggie is unable to work due to injuries. Travis will also be out of work to take care of Maggie and Aria. Your support is greatly appreciated as we all know accidents occur, but no one wants to see it happen when it effects someone's life!
My name is Brittany, I'm from Cedar Rapids, IA
Travis and Maggie where our neighbors, before they moved to a bigger home as their beautiful family continued to grow!
Aria continues to improve she's a little fighting machine!! With her brace off I can finally hold her like a baby( very enjoyable)!! Her skin graft is healing so good. Her next check up is in 3 weeks. After her skin graft is healed there may need to be some plastic surgery and definitely some physical therapy.
I just thank god everyday that we are both ok and getting better so so fast. It's a huge relief. Thank you EVERYONE for everything!!!
I am having surgery next Wednesday to get my skin graft done. I will have to stay 3-4 days in the hospital if everything goes as planned I will then back home to fully recover.
Thank you again for your donations, support and love! It means a lot knowing we have many caring people in our lives cheering us on to get better sooner!! Love you all!!
I was released Friday afternoon and headed to aria's room until she was able to go home. I have wound vacs on both legs and I'm Trying to move about even though it's hard and painful. I have to get those changed out and cleaned every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday until they are removed. I have no estimate on the time I will need them on or when things will get back to the way they were. I just have to stay healthy and pray for a quick recovery.
Aria got her wound vac removed yesterday morning and the doctor said it's healing great! Aria is getting released this afternoon! We will head home but aria is still very Fragile she still has to wear the harness until her femur is completely healed. We have an appointment for a recheck in Iowa city on Monday. The two small areas where aria got burned her belly and her heal are almost completely healed!
My family was blessed to have such amazing friends and family for our support team all the prayers, good vibes visits helped us get a little better a little faster. although we do have a long road Togo still, the support that everyone has given us and continues to helps us get better everyday!
Thank you all so much from the bottom on my heart!!
