WOOFF Langkawi

Hello Everybody,

In 2015 my boyfriend Owen and I ended up on an island in Malaysia called Langkawi helping out a local animal behaviorist, Jeffery take care of over 40 stray dogs all over the island. We planned to stay only one month but ended up spending the rest of our time in Asia helping to care for these adult dogs and puppies.

There is only one shelter on the island and it is currently full. The dogs Jeff primarily cares for live at a nearby Hindu temple. Due to the culture of many of the local people here these dogs are not safe anywhere else; out on the street they have little chance of survival. They are at risk of being killed by local people, hit by cars, or simply starving. This temple is their home and sanctuary.

All of these puppies ended up in his hands due to ignorant pet owners. The local people that do keep dogs as pets still do not know how to care for them. They do not steralize their pets and allow them to continue to reproduce. The problem with this is that when the puppies are born, they are abandoned almost always without their mother. They are not old enough to fend for themselves; sometimes they are still blind and in need of their mother’s milk. These babies are left to die while in a few more months the mother will become pregnant again creating the same disheartening cycle. Every month there are 7-20 baby puppies dumped at the temple.

Jeff is currently the primary care giver for around 30 stray dogs. Everyday he cooks for and goes to the temple to feed these dogs. He purchases and administers any medication that they need, when there are of age he takes them in to be sterilized. He gives them the love that they deserve and most importantly he tries to give them a better chance at life.

In addition to these temple dogs, Jeffery also rescues any animals in need. Dogs and cats that get hit by cars or that are abused by their owners, even the odd monkey. He takes these animals into his own home to be rehabilitated not only physically but emotionally as well. He helps them to overcome their trauma which often takes MUCH more time and effort than any physical wounds they face. He will never turn away an animal in need. This is why Jeffery also currently has 17 adult dogs, 19 puppies (too young to be on their own at the temple), and 16 cats living in his home.

All money raised will contribute to food and medication for the dogs/pups as well as the costs of cooking the food and transporting it to them. It will also go towards any other street dogs on the island that need help.

Jeffery has been doing this exact type of work on this island for ten years. Without any monetary donations now his work will simply not be able to continue and there is no one else to continue it for him. As you can see it is a never-ending story. There will always be animals in need here as there is so few people willing to take care of them and even less that know how. It is extremely difficult work (physically and emotionally) as well as time consuming but he does it out of heart.

Owen and i are no longer in Malaysia to help Jeff first hand so Jeff is solely working on his own basically 24/7 for the animals.

We will all be forever grateful for any donation that you can contribute, large or small. You really do help us to save innocent lives of beautiful, naturally loving, grateful creatures.

Meanwhile Jeffery and some of his friends came out with a name and a proper concept of how they gonna help the stray animals on Langkawi Island. The project is called World Of Our Furry Friends Langkawi (WOOFF Langkawi ).

World Of Our Furry Friends (WOOFF) is a project created by Jeffery Tan and friends with the central purpose of providing care for stray and wild animals in Langkawi. Having graduated from the Animal Behaviour College, California, Jeffery’s knowledge and passion for animals is vast. Jeffery has been working on the island since 2008 and has helped many cats, dogs and other animals receive the care that they need to date. With over 50,000 stray dogs alone in Langkawi, there is clearly a lot more work to be done and the problem is growing. WOOFF therefore needs your help.

WOOFF’s work focuses on the following key areas:

1 Animal Rescue

Jeffery rescues animals that have been injured in the wild or mistreated by people. He provides medical assistance for these animals, either caring for them at home or referring them to a veterinary practitioner. Animal rescues can take hours to complete as Jeffery works tirelessly to gain the trust of the animals. This requires not only time, but an abundance of resources.

2 Animal Rehabilitation

Once rescued, Jeffery provides rehabilitation for the animals to help them to overcome their issues and often mistrust of people. This can take years, with some animals in Jeffery’s care having suffered extreme abuse or injuries. The costs associated with rehabilitation include medicine and food.

3 Animal Sterilisation

Jeffery catches animals in the wild and refers them for sterilisation to ensure that they will not reproduce. PETA Research has shown that just one female dog and her offspring can produce 67,000 puppies in six years. In seven years one female cat and her offspring can give birth to 370,000 kittens. While many of these young animals die due to starvation, illness or predators, the population is still rising rapidly. It is therefore imperative that as many cats and dogs as possible are de-sexed to stop the problem from increasing.

4 Animal Care

Jeffery provides care for over 200 cats and dogs, amongst other animals, in Langkawi. This consists of providing food and medical assistance on an ongoing basis. The costs associated with this are high.

5 Education

Jeffery wants to educate the public on the issues surrounding stray and wild animals. If the community supports WOOFF’s cause, more animals can be sterilised and animal cruelty can be stopped. Every problem WOOFF faces is also a problem for the Langkawi community. With your assistance we can help to improve the lives of our furry friends.
