Renovate the ARHS Weight Room

Donation protected
This past year Amherst High School Athletics has been doing a lot of great things to make the school and community proud. The hockey team has made the playoffs as the top seed, the ultimate Frisbee team is always nationally ranked, cross country received multiple All Western Mass athlete awards, the football team made it to back to back playoff appearances for the first time in school history, and the track team qualified for nationals. Many great things are happening. One large item we are missing to put us over the top, is a functional weight room.

As student athletes we stand in need of all necessities for a proper weight room. Our dumbbells are broken or breaking, and we are missing many weights of dumbbells. We go from 15 lbs dumbbells to a set of 30 lbs dumbbells. We only have enough bumper plates for one person. Power cleans and dead-lifts are done with steel plates which damages the plates and the bars. We do not have proper curl bars either. Many steel plates and bars are rusting. Our boxes are falling apart, making it dangerous to do box jumps. We have attached pictures to show the condition of our weight room. We have also broken down the request into four price points. One is the minimum to get us by, the second is an upgrade to the weight room with all our needs, the third is all we need and some things we want in the weight room and the fourth price point is if we are able to raise funds for a complete and necessary renovation of the weight room.

Current Weight Room:

We know a weight room is essential to our success. Hard work and sacrifice in the weight room always translates to the football field, basketball court, soccer field, track and any other sport. The equipment purchased will go to benefit the whole school. Both female and male athletes as well as special needs classes, those participating in strength and conditioning classes and even faculty and staff use and will be able to use this equipment. Below is the breakdown of what is needed as well as pictures of the current state of the weight room. We have found prices from Rogue Fitness, which is top quality weight room equipment. It will last us much longer than bargain equipment. It is a brand used by many gyms and local high schools. We have gone to the school for the renovation, but to no avail. We do not believe our success should wait for administration to make this happen, even though it may be their responsibility. We have already been approved for a $2,000 grant from the Amherst Rotary club that will help us get started.  Below is a breakdown of how we will spend any money raised. We appreciate your donation and look forward to seeing you at all Amherst High School sports competitions.

Sincerely,

The Amherst Athletic Student Body

Price Breakdown

Tier One: New Olympic bars, curl bars, bumper plates, and dumbbells. This will allow us to do the basic exercises we need with the right weight, even if our weight room will still be a little unorganized.

-5 Olympic Training Bars $1,625

-1000 lbs of Bumper Plates $1,475

-Dumbbells 5 lbs-100 lbs $2,520

-3 Curl Bars $585

Total $6,205

Tier Two: All equipment from tier one, with box jumps, and incline bench (we only have one). This will allow us to move through exercise stations quickly and do a variety of workouts.

-5 Olympic Training Bars $1,625

-1000 lbs of Bumper Plates $1,475

-Dumbbells 5 lbs-100 lbs $2,520

-3 Curl Bars $585

-Incline Bench $400

-Box Jump Set $965

-4 Medicine Balls $360

Total $7,930

Tier Three: Includes all from tier two plus a monster rack which gives us multiple bench, squat, pull up stations, as well as racks to put our bumper weights, Olympic and curl bars, medicine balls, and rope. This will also open up a lot of space in the weight room allowing for more exercise stations and larger capacity. We will also add 2 weight room mirrors. They are more expensive than regular mirrors as they do not break easily. This is not to look at one’s muscles while working out, but to see, critique, and correct lifting form. Bad form can cause muscle tares and also unbalanced strengthening. We will be able to sell some old equipment as well to allow us to get other things we may have missed or use that money for maintenance.

Tier Four: This would be a complete remodel of the weight room. The floor is very old and worn, paint is worn and not even school colors. Many lights are missing or not working and all benches and equipment are outdated but still usable. Tier four is to show that we have a plan to use all money if we were to exceed tier three.
