I am preparing to ride cross-country from Seattle to Key West, on a 36er unicycle, to raise money and awareness for Disabled American Veterans and burn victims. Start date is to be determined based on sponsorships and donations.
Initially, I planned on leaving Seattle on July 4th, but in lieu of that, I will do a local Atlanta ride. I will attempt to do 200 miles in a 24 hour period. I average 10mph on my 36er, so that means I will need to pedal about 20 hours out of the 24. This has been another goal of mine for awhile, so now is a great time to go after it :D
I am working on corporate sponsorships to help fund the 4 to 5 month long trip, but as a fall-back measure, my friend Scotty suggested I do a gofundme account. :D
I have been unicycling off and on for 37 years, and it still feels like I'm floating every time I ride.
I first got into fundraising when I rode my unicycle 100 miles in a day to raise money for my paralyzed brother, Gary. With the help of 17 firefighters that drove over 1,200 miles round-trip in a 30 year-old American LaFrance fire truck, we raised about $12,000 to buy him a used handicap-accessible van.
Unfortunately, he passed-away 2 months later...
I feel like my brothers memory lives-on stronger when I'm fundraising :)
I can't think of a more deserving group of people to raise money for than our Disabled American Veterans. These heroes sacrificed their health to ensure our continued freedom. Please also consider Googling your local DAV Chapter to get involved via a donation of your time/funds.
