Our mother, Alberta Varney, had a stroke on December 25th, 2004 that affected the right side of her brain, paralyzing her left arm and leg. The injuries in her arms and legs has carried long-term effects also in her thighs, feet, knees, and hands. Luckily, she's been able to make progress and regain enough control to swing her left leg to balance herself enough that she can stand and walk slowly. However, without the ability to fully control the muscles in her left leg below her hip, the way that she puts her weight down on her left foot, along with the paralysis, has caused her to develop drop foot. Her drop foot and leg weakness has also led to several problems within her knee and hip. Without proper treatment, the chance of my mother needing a hip replacement soon grows faster with every step she takes.
Luckily, we’ve discovered a company called Bioness that manufactures devices that electrically stimulate the muscles in the calf and thigh to effectively help users lift their leg and walk properly. However, it requires to two different devices to work correctly, one for her thigh and the other for her calf. The devices are called the L300 for Foot Drop
and the L300 Plus for Thigh Weakness which are priced $3500 for each device after financial aid, $7000 in total. She has gotten the opportunity to try the devices and says they helped tremendously to help her walk correctly and take away so much of the pain.
I assure you this would be life changing for my mother. She is not able to work because of her paralysis in her arm and leg and has received disability since her stroke. She has two more children still at home heading into the 8th and 9th grade and a very financially dependent stage in their life. She has given the world to my older brother, myself, and my little brother and sister despite the battle she's had to face these past years.
There is nothing else in the world that I want more than to help my mom not be in pain every day. She won't ask for help but we will. If you see this and are able to help it would mean the world to my family. Anything and everything no matter how small helps so much. God bless you all and thank you for reading! Everything donated will go entirely to the payment of the devices named above.
