Rally For Randy's Cancer Battle

Donation protected
In 2010, my dad, Randy Whipkey, was diagnosed with Alveolar Soft Part Sarcoma (ASPS), after finding a lump under his chin. ASPS is a very rare, slow growing, highly angiogenic (vessel-forming) tumor. After two surgeries to remove the tumor, he was left with half a tongue and plates in his chin. He then went through 32 radiation treatments while having a trach and feeding tube. My dad was unable to work for 7 months.
In 2013, new scans showed that the cancer spread to his lungs and two tumors had to be removed. He was put on a chemotherapeutic drug called Sutent for 2 years with awful side effects, all along never missing work. (He was a laborer at International Paper for 23 years.) He and my mom traveled to New York City for a second opinion and was taken off the Sutent.
In 2016, my dad went for a follow-up scan and 4 tumors were found on his brain. Over Thanksgiving, while visiting my house and on the due date of my daughter, Freyja, he became unresponsive and was taken by ambulance to Hamot in Erie. One of the scariest days of my family's life. After hours of examinations he was put on heavy doses of steroids to shrink the tumors, the next day he thankfully woke up. After returning to Pittsburgh my dad was told he would need to have the largest tumor on his brain removed. On December 27th, after a 6 hour surgery (that was supposed to take 3) performed by an amazing brain surgeon at Shadyside Hospital, the tumor was a successfully removed. At his six month scan following the surgery another tumor was found on the front lobe of his brain. The doctors say the remaining tumors should be manageable with the new chemo drug called Votrient. A few weeks later he had a very bad infection in his mouth and to have 3 teeth pulled. There is now a hole in the bottom of his chin. Anything he eats or drinks drains from this hole. Also, from having his teeth removed, a screw holding the plate in his chin loosened. The screw was removed but part of the plate is now sticking out of his chin. If this doesn't heal he may have to remove the plate (a 10 hour surgery) or undergo skin grafting. He is currently doing a Hyperbaric oxygen treatment to promote healing for the infection, but the chemotherapy pill he's taking does the exact opposite, and nothing is healing.
All of this adds up to an exorbitant amount of medical bills, even with insurance. My dad has not been able to work since October of 2016. He was just was approved for long term disability through his company but will receive less then half than if he were working. He is currently trying to get approved for SSI.
My dad is a pretty private person and isn't one to ask for help or take handouts, he doesn't want anyone to feel bad for him. But he deserves something good to happen. Randy Whipkey is the greatest dad, grandfather, and husband to my mom. He would help anyone at the drop of a hat. He's worked his whole life to give his family everything and the last 7 years have been a major battle, but he remains strong. Please help him worry about one less thing! Consider donating to this fund to help ease the burden of his medical bills. Every dollar will help!
