Hey all. We (Pati, Will, Joshua, Mckenzie, Bianca, Sarah, Bruno) are a group of local activists/ long-term Bushwick residents actively organizing around issues of displacement and a brutal housing crisis that has hit our Brooklyn community.
Mayday Space in collaboration with Athena Soules and the NYC Light Brigade, is engaging in a grassroots art project to bring awareness to the neocolonization of our communities and a predatory real estate market that is pushing our people out. And we need your help!
Our project will light up Bushwick with light brigade signs that would be displayed on home windows alongside holiday light decorations. With our fundraising goal of $600**, we'll be able to host a workshop at Mayday Space in which we'll teach up to 20 people how to create these brigades to illuminate the injustices of gentrification. One block will have up to 5 light signs that captures people's attention as they walk on it at night. The other 15 light signs will be strategically placed on buildings across or next to new development all throughout Bushwick. The $600 will cover materials to create the signs as well as food for the workshop. Our goal is to collectively raise the money by Friday November 20th, 2015. Our deadline is tight because we want our Workshop to coincide with the lights that are put up by homeowners and tenants during the holiday season.
This first run is a pilot with the ultimate grand vision of launching a larger project in the future that produces enough anti-gentrification light brigades to light up the majority of blocks in all of Bushwick. Through the power of light, we hope to raise awareness against the gentrification, colonization, and displacement of our of peoples in Bushwick, Brooklyn.
** Any donations beyond that take us beyond $600 will cover our likely underestimated costs and enable us to broaden the project. This is an ongoing project with the greater goal of spreading throughout Brooklyn!!
