Save Chico and Friends
$17,230 of $15,000 goal
On the afternoon of March 30th 2017 six brave cows made headline news when they valiantly escaped from a St. Louis, Missouri slaughterhouse located in the city's north side. All six cows have since been safely recovered by the St. Louis City Metropolitan Police Department in addition to the city's Animal Control. Prior to their capture one of the six cows, since named "Chico" led police on a dramatic pursuit for freedom that lasted for several hours. "Chico", named by a crowd of bystanders was eventually safely captured separately from her five companions, and was given more media attention as well. However the purpose of this fundraiser is to hopefully provide sanctuary for ALL six of these brave and desperate animals. Although potential sanctuaries have been identified, additional options are greatly appreciated. The money raised on this page will being going in entirety to the sanctuary in which the cow(s) will be placed.
In addition to donations we're asking for concerned phone calls to be directed to Star Packing Company, to encourage the release of these six sly steer. Provided as follows is the number to reach Star: 314-652-0262. This is as equally as important as our donations. We must add, it's in our best interest to keep these phone calls as respecful and professional as possible. This is is of the utmost of importance as Star has been cooperative in our efforts thus far.
Due to the volume of emails we have received, we enourage your discussions, concerns, and comments to be directed to our facebook page:

Hey guys, hope all is well. All six cows are doing great, as they were released to pasture today at their new foster home. You can find an incredible video documenting their arrival attached below. Also we're excited to announce that Gentle Barn is closing in on their current gofundme campaign goal of $22,500. However what makes this even more exciting is that upon completion of this fundraiser, the $22,500 dollars raised will be being matched in it's entirety by the Backes family (Kelly and David) bringing the total of the current fundraiser (upon completion) to $45,000! Although the money we raised in our campaign (which exceeded $17,000) was instrumental in securing the freedom of our six furry friends, the remaining portion was quickly spent
on vetting and boarding up to this point. So although our initial work was a major undertaking, more work remains to be done, and helping Gentle Barn complete it's current fundraiser (attached below) should be our current priority. The campaign is within a few hundred dollars of it's goal, so for those unable to donate, simply sharing the the page will be as equally helpful!
Thanks for being awesome,
The Gentle Barn has now launched a new Gofundme (as we are no longer accepting donations on this page). We would again like to thank those of you who have donated to our campaign previously, as the money we raised was responsible for
allocating the cows to Gentle Barn and helping cover costs thus
far. However at this time, we would like to encourage additional donations (at the link attached below) as the cows are currently being held at the University of Missouri to undergo veterinary care, while Gentle Barn makes the necessary arrangements as to their permanent sanctuary
placement for the future.
Thanks for your continued love and support of these incredible animals,
On the evening of April 2nd 2017, we were successful in coming to terms on a verbal handshake with Star Processing to purchase ALL SIX of the crafty cattle our fundraiser was created to benefit. In addition to this we also secured a cozy, wooded, 3 acre property in St. Louis County to serve as a temporary foster home. In addition to this we were also able to successfully transfer the COMPLETE SUM of our proceeds to the Gentle Barn (A 501c3 NFP Sanctuary). On the morning of April 3rd 2017, with a portion of the proceeds we raised, the Gentle Barn successfully acquired Chico and his five flighty friends from Star Packing, and together we successfully transferred them to their new temporary home (where they'll remain until The Gentle Barn formally announces the location of their permanent sanctuary (where they'll remain under the organization's care for the remainder of their lives). With that being said it's crucial we continue to assist them in helping offset these costs. In addition to the helping offset these costs, your donations will help the Gentle Barn remain capable of performing heroic rescues like this is the future. In addition to operating animal sanctuaries in California and Tennessee, the Gentle Barn provides community outreach, assists at risk children(by using their inherent compassion for animals), engages in speaking seminars, and many more wonderful forms of charity. Although our campaign will soon be ending we can't stress enough the importance of helping Gentle Barn. To avoid paying fees to Gofundme we encourage direct donations to Gentle Barn at the link provided below.
In closing we'd like to thank everybody who was involved in our campaign. The first chapter in securing a beautiful ending to this inspiring story was only made possible by the totality of the efforts of those involved. No one person in this campaign was bigger than the next. However I would like personally thank those who I can in a second update at a later time. Right now it's important that we continue to further our efforts of assisting Gentle Barn, by sharing this story and encouraging those who can to help donate on their behalf. In addition, by sharing this story we can also help inspire a formula for success for issues involving animals in the future. Although emotions ran high through out these past five days, I can personally attest that this story would have had a much different ending had as we as a team not remained as selflessly focused, confidently poised, and professionally dedicated as we had been. This was not only about saving six lives, but was about bringing together a community, to encouraging the discussion of animal rights and creating an opportunity to inspire those around us.
We did this together,
You and me
I'm so proud of those cows for their bravery period LOL. I'm making a donation and will also make the phone call. I've asked my Facebook friends to do the same. They all deserve to live out their lives at a sanctuary. Thanks to the St Louis metro police also for helping to round them up safely. I hope they will all live out long peaceful lives.
I am so thankful this happened and thankful for all of the people that have donated. I wanted to help and do something when I first saw this, but thought it was too big of a deal for me and a crisis, meaning, something needed to be done that moment and I couldn't. I was so RELIEVED to see someone stepped up.. so thank you to everyone. Every little bit makes a HUGE difference!!!
The slaughter house owner is beyond words. Can't donate have 30 mouths to feed here. Sick of cruel slaughterhouse and abuse of animals. They don't know how to kill without abuse. My father said if not put down correctly they ruin the meat. Must be related to china.
