Due to cuts in funding, Launch Pad needs your help.
It is a workshop for established writers held annually (usually in June or July) in beautiful high altitude Laramie, Wyoming. The program aims to provide a crash course in modern astronomy science through guest lectures and observation through the University of Wyoming’s professional telescopes.
The workshop has been supported in the past by NASA, the National Science Foundation, Uwingu, and SFWA
as well as a number of generous individual donors. The primary goal is to teach writers, editors, and those with audiences of all types about modern science, specifically astronomy, and in turn reach their audiences. We hope to both educate the public and inspire the next generation of scientists.
Past attendees have included Campbell Award-winning authors Jay Lake and Mary Robinette Kowal, Hugo and Nebula winners Nancy Kress, Robert J. Sawyer, Ann Leckie, and Hugo winner David D. Levine, science comedian Brian Malow, award-winning editor Ellen Datlow, and dozens of other talented and distinguished people. Any writers, editors, or other creative people who can benefit from the experience and put more and better quality astronomy in front of audiences are our ideal attendees.
Launch Pad was created by science fiction author, astronomer, and University of Wyoming professors Mike Brotherton, PhD, and Jim Verley, PhD. A third individual, Christian Ready, an astronomer whose work
experience includes the Hubble Space Telescope and popular public speaker has been a regular instructor as well as a very strong supporter of Launch Pad.
This fund-raiser is being run by author Doug Farren, a strong supporter and regular attendee of Launch Pad. I will post a picture of the check as it is presented to Mike Brotherton this year when I return to Launch Pad.
