HELP BIG MIKE FIGHT CANCER!
As most of you know, in February of last year, Mike receive the dreaded news that he had colon cancer. Since that time Mike has been in and out of the hospital and has endured multiple rounds of chemo.
While the general consensus is to continue administering chemotherapy, the hope is that tumor sizes can be reduced enough to make surgery a viable option down the road. Mike has tolerated chemotherapy as well as can be expected. Tumor sizes have been dramatically reduced and in some spots completely eliminated. In addition to traditional western medicine, the family continues to entertain other holistic approaches to bolster Mike's immune system.
As I'm sure you can all imagine, this regimen can be taxing, physically, emotionally and financially. Up until recently, Mike had been receiving disability income. Last month he received the news that he is no longer eligible for disability income, and to make matters worse, the wait for SSI Disability income to kick in will take anywhere from five months to a year.
In addition to the financial burden, Mike had to stop receiving his life saving chemo treatment in order to have hernia surgery. As of today, (February 19, 2018) complications from this surgery have landed him back in the hospital.
Instead of adopting a 'woe is me' attitude, and in true Mike Magana fashion, he has maintained his award winning personality and charm. If you saw him he'd give you a huge smile and a "yeah baby!" that would make you feel like he's doing great. That's the Mike we all know and love with all our hearts.
As one of Mike's best friends for forty years, I can tell you that the last thing he'd ever do is ask for help if he and his family didn't absolutely need it. While Brandi has worked tirelessly to support the family (full time employment plus night and weekend jobs) there are only so many hours she can work while juggling college expenses for their children (Haley and Michael) plus being Mike's primary care giver.
At this point, with Mike physically unable to return to work, we are turning to our friends and family who have been so gracious to ask what they can do to help.
