Wiregrass Ranch High School Odyssey of the Mind Team has the honor to compete at World Finals, May 25 - 29 in Iowa at the Iowa State University. Our team has competed together for 8 years and is saying goodbye to competition this year due to team members graduating high school. This is the first time our team has qualified for World finals which is a once in a lifetime experience, for teams to compete with other teams from other countries. Our team has remained together and over the years has developed a sense of family. They have grown together and have learned so much from this program to become independent, respectable and awesome future leaders.
On February 27,2016 they competed in Gulf Coast Regional Odyssey of the mind, division 3, nocycle recycle, where they placed 1st.
On April 9, 2016 they competed in Florida Odyssey of the Mind State and placed 2nd.
The World competition unfortunately does bring fees for lodging, transportation and food that runs about 1000.00 per team member.
Our team faces many struggles among having single parents and a recent family tragedy that truly tested the determination of this team to continue on. Our team has become an extended family. In fact, there skit this year since it is their final year was all about their past experiences and what they learned in their years of Osyssey of the Mind. Family, judges and team members truly felt connected with the sense of identity in this organization and team.
As a parent, a coach of this team , I cannot express enough how lucky I have been to be involved in such an amazing program and had the opportunity to watch these team members grow into these fantastic, responsible young adults . It is so refreshing to see this team build on teamwork, think outside the box and respect one another to solve a problem all on their own. Whether or not they win the trophy or ribbon, they won the lifetime lessons that Odyssey of the mind has given them.
