3D Printing Professor Needs Help

Joseph Larson  HURRICANE, UT
Howdy. My name is Joe and I’m the 3D Printing Professor. I’ve been making 3D printing videos since 2012 and back then my videos were pretty rough. They were basically just some guy talking into a webcam about the cool projects and experiments I was doing with my 3D printer.

My videos have been getting steadily better since then as I’ve gotten better equipment and built a better space for it.

I’ve never had a lot of money to throw at this, either the videos or the 3D printers. You may not know this, but I didn’t buy my first 3D printer. I won it for my excellent 3D design skills, and I’m still using that printer to this day. That's kinda the way I do things, just making due with what I have, and I've done pretty good with that.

However, recently I had a trifecta of hard times hit me.

First, I got a new job, which was good.  But it meant that I had to move my family to a different town, which pretty much drained the coffers. Then, that job unexpectedly ended. And to top it all of the computer I had been using for years to do my videos with started to crash unexpectedly.
I’m used to dealing with this sort of thing on my own. But I don't want to just scrape something together, get a loaner, and live with whatever, I want to kick this problem's butt. I want to bring you guys screaming content, and I need a computer with teeth to do it.
This ain't no sob story. Yes, I'm out of work, but I'm not playing the victim. But this also isn't a gofundme with nothing more than a feel-goody-goody for you. Backers get rewards.

All backers at any level get the 3D files for a secret decoder ring so you can send and receive message with others in the club, as well as decode secret messages in my videos.

In addition, those who contribute a little more will get their names on tiles that will be built into a contributor mosaic that will be in the background of all my videos going forward. The more you contribute the bigger your tile will be.

If you can support me on a regular basis you can jump over to Pateron and sign up for a regular monthly donation. All Pateron funds are going towards this campaign until it is meet.

If a one-time donation is all you can do, I hope you'll give generously to this campaign help me reach this goal.

If no then I hope you’ll give me a “howdy” on social media and let me know you like what I do. It really means a lot to me.

Together, I know we can do this. I can’t do it on my own, I need your help.

You guys are amazing. This campaign is progressing so fast I found myself in a quandary. I wanted to announce this campaign breaching 50% with a video, but I had only just made a video and I don't want my YouTube feed to be nothing more than "go go GoFundMe Rangers". Fortunately I have an angle. The supporter mosiac tiles that I've been printing out have largely been done with a sample pack from Helios 3D, so it's time for a video review.

I am humbled, truly I am. At the same time I am wondering if I should add some stretch goals to this campaign. I've been shooing all my benchtalk and review videos on a Canon Powershot camera which works okay, but really wasn't made for this and to get good sound I have to record through my computer with a USB mic. I'd could do better videos faster with a new condenser mic and camera to put it on. I'm not so proud as to insist that I make the jump to 4k, so the final tab would only be about $350 more. Is that asking too much?

I may be out of touch this weekend. Big life event happening. Unless this blows up I'll see you on Monday.

You can tell this was impromptu because I didn't even take the time to put on a tie. Thanks to many generous donators this fund raising drive in two days has managed nearly 40% of it's goal, between contributions here and new supporters on pateron.

But it's not over yet. In order to reach my goal more people need to hear about this campaign, so share this wherever you can.

I'm grateful to have you all in this. Together we can make something great.

I've updated the campaign story and goal (with a new clever picture) to accurately reflect what this is for. This campaign is for a new computer that I need and can't afford myself because I lost my job. I decided if I were going to ask for help it wasn't going to be just what I needed, but what I really wanted to be able to bring you better content, so I can stop being so frustrated at what I can't do.

I've also updated the rewards. Contributors to this campaign will become a part of the growing Mosaic wall that I'm building to thank those who support me. I feel like it's representative of what I do, because I build with I do with you, and we work together. I couldn't do what I do without you.

I hope you'll spread the word and help me meet my goal to bring you even better content.

Wish I could do more, but this is all I can afford to do at this time. Waited to try and be able to do the $100, but couldn't quite get there.

I solved my initial problem (leaking heated block)! I unscrewed the nozzle about 2mm then screwed in the throat further. It leaked a tiny bit at the top for a bit, then that stopped as well. Thanks for your help...next problem is Z wobble and a hobbed pulley that doesn't grip well. Good luck!

I have loved your content and was super excited to see my name on the tile. The scope changed and I thought I could help more.

I love what you do and I love your tie collection. I bought my III P mini based on your recommendation and I love it. Thank you for being a pioneer and please continue to do what you do.
