Dr. Simona Tibu was on her way to see dental patients in August 2013 when she was pulled over by a Sheriff Oscar Rob Behiels for a traffic violation. The Sheriff proceeded to illegally arrest, assault and battery Dr. Tibu to point where she suffered major bruises and injuries to point she was hospitalized. Dr. Tibu's traumatic experience has motivated her to setup Afford Justice, a non-profit organization, to help people get proper legal representation and the necessary support system when they are facing an unjust situation. She doesn’t want them to give up because they lack the necessary financial resources. Afford Justice will also lobby the Government to provide better and more extensive training for our police officers, who are only required to complete 6 months of training, compared to 2- 4 years in most European countries.
Donations will be used to pay for legal representation and offset costs (employment search, skills upgrading, daycare, counselling, rehabilitation) for innocent people who don’t have a voice to make their case and avoid settling simply due to lacking financial resources. Afford Justice will also use the donations to lobby the Government to increase police training across Canada so that wrongful shootings and excessive force are a rare occurrence in our fair and just society.
Afford Justice will recruit lawyers across Canada who are amenable to represent those innocent people who don’t have the means to obtain proper representation. Afford Justice will need funds to recruit the finest lawyers and convince them to join our cause. The lawyers who come on board will be paid by Afford Justice for each case they handle. Secondly, Afford Justice will do everything in its power to increase the length and quality of training of our police officers. 6 months is simply not enough. Funds from your donations will be used in various ways to bring about the desired change from our Government to improve police training.
Dr. Tibu’s horrific experience with the Alberta Sheriff inspired her to prevent similar situations happening to others through her non-profit organization Afford Justice. Dr. Tibu’s plan is to start Afford Justice immediately because she doesn’t want one more person more to suffer the way she did that day in Augus 2013.
