Martin Duque passed away on 02/14/18 at the Stoneman Douglas High School mass shooting. He was a very funny kid, outgoing but sometimes really quiet. He was sweet and caring and loved by everyone in his family. Most of all, he was my baby brother. My family and I have no words to describe the what we feel and the tragedy that we are living. All my prayers to the ones we lost and everyone who lived this horror and is traumatized. My family and I appreciate any help you can give. R.I.P Martin Duque
Tho those of you thinking this family is trying to capitalize on their tragedy: 1) Maybe they started the campaign before they heard the State of Florida would pay for it, maybe they have other costs associated witht the funeral that won't be paid, maybe they have to put the money up front, who knows 2) Honestly? I don't care if this money is used for something else. If this family wants to take a vacation to get some freaking peace where they don't have internet strangers questioning their grief, then fine. My money was well spent. I cannot believe the amount of suspicion and questioning, shame on you.
Maybe this was set up before the family knew the state would be paying. At this point, they could use the money for counseling or time off to heal. Both would be beneficial. I personally don't care what they do with the money. No amount could bring their family member back. My thoughts and prayers are with the family. God brought you to this and He will bring you through this.
You people ought to be ashamed to take such time to say anything negative about this family. Give a donation if you want to, but be a human while choosing to voice your opinion. If they pay for the funeral (which is clear that it has been confirmed that Florida is paying for it) or not, it doesn't change anything. If it were me, I would be so sick that I would not be able to think let alone handle going to work so maybe the family could use the money to just give them a moment. I mean where is your humanity? Those who lack empathy will be the same people who seek sympathy and thats just the way that the tables turn, so be careful when placing judgement. I really send my condolences and I can not imagine the grief that your family is feeling. May God bless your family and help with the healing of your hearts. My donation is small but I'm sure every penny will help.
For those of you speculating if this is a legit campaign shame on you!!! My family is going through a tough time and my cousin made a mistake on the date. Please keep my family and everyone else affected in your prayers and thank you to those of you who shared and donated. We are truly thankful for your sincere condolences
I’m a recently retired school social worker, who worked for Broward County Public Schools in the Parkland area for 17 years. I had the pleasure to work with Martin Duque and his family. I first met them when Martin entered elementary school and have kept in touch with them since. The Duques are an intact, honest and hard working family who always live contently within their means because they have solid family values. This is why the thought of them taking advantage of the most painful tragedy of losing their beloved Martin, is just unimaginable. For those who generously donated, as a school social worker who got to know and grow very fond of this family, I give you my word that every penny is justified and would only serve to help this family respond to the materials needs created by this tragedy.
Okay I’m gonna make this comment. For ALL of you that think this is fake, IT IS NOT. The reason for it being created 14 months ago is because this page was originally created by my friend Miguel when he was a senior at Douglas. He used it for the school soccer team. He most likely figured for ease of use since there were no donations on the original post that it was easier to change it t the relevant topic. I personally know Miguel and his family and I promise you they would never do anything to benefit off of a tragic event like this.
This family is torn apart............ This family is a honest family whom at the point of this page had no clue that anyone in our government was going to help them! And until you walk in these shoes you will never understand. So because of a few statements made on TV you have to bash the family well until the someone from the government comes and says to the victims families face to face we got you they were left on their own to take care of their own.
I think the reason they’re questioning it is due to the update that says 6 months ago, but I’m not quite sure. I saw this and immediately whipped out my card to help! I’m so sorry that people are questioning it. My thoughts and prayers! remember you are loved! Sending it from PA!
I don't doubt this page was legitimately set up by family, but I am confused as to why the article stated that it was for "funeral costs." The Attorney General has already stated multiple times that the state of Florida would be paying all funeral costs (as well as medical bills) for each victim. That being said, what will this money be used for? You're one of only a couple families looking to cash in, and I'm confused as to why. Other than that, you have my deepest sympathy, as well as healing thoughts and prayers for your entire family.
I am so so sorry for your loss. I have been stewing over this since it happened. I am glad people are monetarily able to help you, and that you can bring your family to FL. There are so many people rooting for you guys to create positive change, because of the shooting. My heart and love is with you guys.
It breaks my heart that people are being judgmental of a family that has suffered such great loss. I doubt very much if the family is spending a lot of time reading newspapers or watching TV. They are grieving. As others have said, they will have plenty of expenses beyond the cost of the funeral anyway. All of the families are in my prayers, as well as the other students who will have a lot of emotional scars.
Today we visited with the family and we are from Parkland and were there to offer support to the family. This is a legitimate account set up by the oldest son Miguel and although Broward County is covering burial expenses, the logistics of how Broward County will disburse the funds is something they will have to figure out, but there will be other needs for the family. This is a humble family and have 4 boys to raise and all are impacted by the loss of Martin. This is a long road to recovery and we should all pray they stay strong, healthy and united. Whatever you give to this family, give it with love and rest assured that your intentions are well served.
