My name is Lauren Duffy, I am 19 years of age and I am an International Karate Athlete. I compete with the Irish National Karate Team and represent the country at various events all over the world. I have done so in many countries in Europe including, Scotland, Belgium, Denmark and Spain. My biggest competition to date was the U21 and Junior World Championships in Tenerife 2017. I was the athlete picked to fill the one spot available in ladies sparring +68kg.
Most recently I have represented Ireland in the Senior European Championships in Serbia, May 2018. I wish to continue my success by medalling and being selected for many other competitions including the Senior World Championships in Madrid 2018 and the U21 and Junior European Championships 2019 and hopefully many World and European Championships in the future. I am currently ranked 39th in the world in U21 and 122nd in Senior rankings.
In order to gain the number 1 spot in any division, we collect points for the tournaments we enter. The points are contingent on your success at these competitions, meaning the better you perform and progress the more points you will receive. These points also count towards Olympic Qualification. Any athletes ultimate dream is to make it to the Olympics.
Karate is not currently a government-funded sport and all trips, training camps and competitions are funded by the athletes and partially by our associations. Many of the competitions that we are required to attend take place in South America, China and Canada which are not always financially feasible for every athlete. This is where you come in.
All money raised will go towards training, training camps, competitions, travel expenses for competitions or nutrition for my journey to hopefully compete in the Olympics in 2020 or 2024. Any donations, big or small, will be greatly appreciated!
