3 Bike & Build Bikes Stolen

$1,050 of $1,050 goal

Raised by 27 people in 10 months
Created July 3, 2018
We are Bike & Build's Northern US (NUS) route team.   27 of us are currently biking across the country to raise money and awareness for affordable housing, while also helping at build sites along the way.   3 of our team member's bikes were stolen right outside of St.Mary Catholic church during our stop in Kalamazoo,  MI.  2 of the bikes were recovered,  but with damage,  and accessories (lights,  tools, etc) missing.

With your support,  we were able to buy a new bike and missing accessories,  at a shop in Chicago and have the entire team back on the road!  Thank you so much for your generosity!

Sincerely,
The Bike & Build NUS Team

Hi,

As you may already know, The NUS18 Team dipped their wheels in the Pacific Ocean a month ago today, signifying the end of an epic journey across the country. You probably don’t know, however, what ever happened to those 3 stolen bikes of ours!

Miraculously, 2 of the 3 bikes were recovered that night, as chronicled in our blog ( https://nus18.wordpress.com/2018/07/03/day-23-kalamazoo-the-case-of-the-missing-bikes/)! With the 3rd bike still missing, teammates who were riding in the van graciously let our last bike-less rider borrow their bikes until we were able to get a great deal on a used replacement bike in Chicago, about a week later.

As luck would have it, a week after that, we got a call from Kalamazoo saying that the last bike was recovered too! Lee Taylor, a site supervisor at Kalamazoo Habitat, saw a bike that he recognized from our flier being sold at a garage sale, and called the cops. Lee and Joel from the Kalamazoo Habitat then drove all the way to Janesville, WI to return the bike later that week.

After paying for a replacement bike and damaged/ stolen bike accessories, the NUS team now had an interesting predicament on their hands. We had an extra $687 and too many bikes on our hands. The extra bike was carted around in the trailer for a few weeks, until it was donated to our host, The Ruth Miers House, in Bizmark, ND. They had a bicycle loaner program for low income residents, so we knew the bike would be in good hands.

We’re happy to announce that Bike and Build will be donating your $687 directly to Habitat for Humanity of Kalamazoo Valley! We appreciate their help so much, and can’t imagine a more deserving beneficiary. We also want to THANK YOU for all of your support; for making this summer possible, and supporting such an important cause. Thank You!

Much Love,
The NUS 2018 Team

We're so excited to announce that between this gofundme, and additional cash donations, we've raised enough money to replace the missing bike and accessories! We bought a new bike at a local bike shop in Chicago and are so happy to have the whole team back on the road. We couldn't have done it without your support and generosity.

Thank you!
