Last year "Uncle Buck" asked me to help with his 14th annual holiday Veteran food and toy drive. I was reluctant at first because I can't do anything on a small scale. I set my sights on filling up a Leo Kaytes pickup truck to start. We ended up filling two.
We used the radio waves of our friends at Wall Radio and the radio commercial was a big success. It brought tears to peoples eyes. With a little help from my local friends in retail, we were able to set up food and toy donation buckets everywhere!
I learned some valuable lessons from this experience. A lot of the food donated was full of sodium which was bad for our veterans with high blood pressure. We also had a lot of expired dates or "undesirable" canned goods. A good percentage of food had to be sorted out and thrown away. Because people are busy during the holiday season, it was also difficult to get to the drop off sites in time for pick up. People started offering cash and check donations instead. That actually worked out better because we were able to buy "fresh food" and items that the veterans really needed. Also saved us from making runs to the dumpster. This year Uncle Buck is doing things more efficiently!
Uncle Buck is teaming up with his friends at The American Legion Post 1163. Uncle Buck also has the backing of local retailers, like toys "R" Us, ShopRite and Sam's Club. These retailers offer discounts and more bang for our "Buck"Now with go fund me, we will be able to for fulfill the "specific" needs list of our local veterans. Uncle Buck believes in the creed "we leave no man behind". We only ask for a five dollar ($5.00) donation. We thank you in advance for supporting Uncle Buck's holiday food and toy drive. The funds raised by our friends will be donated to Uncle Buck's American Legion post 1167 in Chester New York.
Our "Bucks for Buck's" Second annual campaign begins on Veterans Day and ends on Christmas Eve. This gives us 45 days to reach our goal of $2500. In our estimate that's double what we raised in food cost last year. With your help, we will do it!
