UPDATE:

This GoFundMe has allowed me to connect with a huge number of amazing people. Many of you have told me your stories, and you've all listened to mine. I could not be more proud of all that we have accomplished here in less than a year.

While I still have legal bills to pay from getting this far - there's a very big bit of news that I wanted to put up top here, because it changes everything and more importantly, it changes what you are giving money to if you decide to do so.

As of right now, any private prosecution is paused. I had to get creative once the bill for legal advice came in at half the total of all money raised. Suddenly everything seemed impossible. That there was no way to go forward because I could never raise enough money to take it forward. And worse, the advice I received (from a top QC that does work for the CPS from time to time as Prosecutor) was that the law was clearly broken and there was ample evidence to mount and win a voyeurism case.

Since the law broken, and the police and CPS didn't know that the law existed back when they investigated things in 2015/2016, they never actually looked at the video he took of me as a crime. Which gave me an idea.

I filed a police report.

I am giving the police and the CPS a do over.

I considered taking this page down this morning once I received the crime number from the investigating office, but have left it up because of the messages, connections and encouragement I have had from the community of people who have come together to support me.

Any money given will go to pay off legal bills incurred so far, help keep this story alive, and help me and my daughter get through this. If you'd rather give to an amazing charity doing fantastic work in this space, consider donating to the Centre for Women's Justice: https://www.centreforwomensjustice.org.uk/donate

UPDATE:

For the moment, we are parking the rape prosecution. BUT we are still taking forward the UK's first crowdfunded private prosecution of a sexual offence: voyeurism.

This has been a difficult decision to make - and I will update here with more soon. I just wanted to be sure to put it here now.

We are still raising money though, because there will still be a private prosecution. But the upside is that it is going to be much cheaper. So I've lowered the target that we're aiming for.

Check back soon for more detail.

----original story----
In May of 2015, I woke up naked and terrified on a hotel bed next to a man I'd never seen before. Something was very wrong.

I suspected that I been drugged, and as I found out later, I had been raped.

I did everything right after that: the police had me, my rapist and the hotel room immediately. But me and my case fell through every crack there was.

The last straw was when I met with the Crown Prosecution Service on 2 November 2016, and they told me that there is nothing that they are going to do. Even though I sat there with my lawyer and explained over and over again that the toxicology analysis was done based on the wrong timeline, that the man who raped me hadn't had so much as a sip of alcohol, that some law had to have been broken when my rapist took a 1 minute and 2 second video of me unconsious and naked on a hotel bed without my consent.

The CPS have an abysmal record when it comes to rape, and they just can't be bothered with my case.

But I still want justice.

Luckily: I've found a great barrister. And this story is not over. Which is why I need your help.

As I am in the UK, I can bring a private prosecution. That is, I can pay a (very expensive) barrister to bring charges against my rapist. I can pay someone to do the Crown Prosecution Service's job for them. Given the evidence, this would likely result in jail time for him. But this is a very expensive endeavour and I can't do it my own.

Please help. Every little bit helps.

Hi everyone,

I'm in the midst of consolidating my email list. Please sign up here to receive updates from me in the future: http://eepurl.com/dqRwMD

This is a big week for me. It was my daughter's birthday. I have quite a few meetings coming up for my business ( http://www.36ns.xyz) . And later this week, it is the three year anniversary of my rape.

Ok, that last one is the big one. Before I went public last October, this particularly milestone was one that only a few friends and family members knew about. And it hurt each day, week, month and year that passed with nothing happening to bring my rapist to justice. And it was something that I suffered pretty much on my own.

But now, with 1099 people like you having given to help to bring my rapist to justice ( http://www.gofundme.com/prosecuterape), this is a day that will not be passing quietly. I will be hanging out with friends, old and new, and a few supporters who happen to be in the neighbourhood. We will be celebrating what has been achieved so far, and what is coming next. And to be fair: there's a lot coming next. From the private prosecution to launching the charity to a possible human rights case, watch this space.

So I wanted to write a quick note to say THANK YOU. Thank you for giving me the strength to do all of this. Thank you for your donations, your messages of support, your likes on Facebook, the way you have all helped spread the word about my story and everything you all have done for me. You guys are the heroes here. I cannot thank you enough.

All the best, and with so much appreciation for your continued support,
Emily Hunt

PS: Remember, if you want to stay in touch, please opt-in over here to future updates ( http://eepurl.com/dqRwMD). With so much going on, you won't want to miss out. Trust me.

A quick update!

While we aren't to our financial goal yet, I'm pressing ahead on all fronts. I believe that we will get to where we need to be financially, mostly because the 1059 of you who have given so far have done exactly that, given. I know that more will.

Some amazing people are supporting this movement, including my friend Elliot Kaye who is running a marathon in support of my efforts. You can find out more about that here: https://www.facebook.com/events/112070872919152/

Even my daughter - who always picks a charity for people to give money to for her birthday instead of getting presents - has decided, unprompted, that this year, she's asking people to give to my GoFundMe. (Yes, I cried. And she can totally have that pony / castle / trip to the moon or whatever else she wants!).

So I believe we'll get to where we need to be to fund my private prosecution AND to properly start the charity to push for more prosecutions.

To that end, if you're interested in learning more about the charity itself as we build and grow it, please do sign up for my newsletter here: http://eepurl.com/ddNP7z

I expect to be sending out an email to the list later this week asking for your input and ideas, as well as asking your opinion on what the charity's formal objectives should be.

I seriously respect and love you all for the support you've given so far - I've said it many times but this is the most amazing crowd. I can't wait to take the next steps with you guys behind me.

Let's go change the world.

Here's the update that you've all been waiting for: yesterday, I reviewed all of the evidence that the police have turned over with my barrister. It was an epic 3 hour long conference - and some of it was very upsetting. But at the end of it all, my barrister declared that given the evidence, that there is a reasonable prospect of conviction. This AMAZING news. It's the first hurdle to launching the private prosecution.
I'll be sending out a more full update to my mailing list on my meeting with the barrister, next steps, and the amazing fact that I can now prove that the CPS lied to me on several occasions about the evidence. If you're not on that list, pop over to www.emilyinpublic.com to sign up.
But for now, I just really wanted to say THANK YOU to all of you - the fantastic crowd that has made this private prosecution possible. Honestly, thank you so much for your financial support but also all of your messages. I couldn't be launching the private prosecution without your help. On both fronts.

I would suggest that you make contingencies to sue the Metropolitan Police as soon as possible, for it is their failure that is causing the publicizing and prolonging of your ordeal. Litigation against the police is the only way to prevent such miscarriages against women in the future because it provides the means to force law enforcement to drastically improve their response to such matters...

You are so strong. There will be many barriers and people who will make this harder but remember how many women and men have gone through what you have and will be supporting you. No matter what happens you didn’t let him win and stood up against a system that fails far too many people. Best of luck, your courage is an inspiration

I agree it would be a good idea to sue the Metropolitan Police for two reasons , firstly so that they will learn by their mistakes to ensure that such a case is prosecuted and investigated properly in future , but also any damages received could be put to good use for future private prosecutions .

In support of your cause, let your barrister focus on what GHB the rape drug is. Hydroxybutyrate its in the name and other synthetic variants, the reason that it is often not detected in toxology reports is in the nature of the substance. It travels through the body at a high rate .Not detectable in urine and blood samples after a period of time .If a brain tissue sample was taken it would most likely show up.Wishing you strength in your conviction and a successful end result.

You should be aware I reported and he was charged. Good for you going forward but the trial was the absolute worst hell of my life and led to a series of break downs then blamed me for the failure as they did not understand my case and two years later I'm still asking for answers. Good luck with this but be aware the process is hell and if you think them saying no is bad it just may not be the closure you think it is. Huggs

Don't give up on private prosecution. You need to regroup and find new avenues for support (consider approaching celebrities, politicians in UK and abroad for raising funds...if you tried before and failed, try again and keep trying). Get back on the telly, radio whatever at every and any opportunity... Apply for Criminal Injury Claim, there is a two year limit, but you may still be eligible. If you succeed with the criminal complaint, follow through with civil claims, and not just against the perp. I successfully sued a solicitor firm and a police force despite being a litigant in person with no previous legal experience...it can be done and you are more than capable of doing this yourself if needed. Since you have been let down very badly by the authorities, you should seriously look at using the civil courts for achieving some redress...encumbering someone with debt having to defend court actions, especially High Court actions, may get you some justice. You have to treat this as a sort of war...you have to soldier on with it because you have come this far and sacrificed a lot. You must win.

Very grateful that you are pursuing the case, because there is something men are using to cause women to sleep through their abuse. I received a broken rotary cup; and the pain and management center stated that I would have had to fallen from a building or down steps to gain that injury. I feel the police should inform and find out how they are committing this crime, what they are using to make you sleep through it.

Our organisation deals with victims of marriage fraud. What do we mean by this? Mainly victims who have have married a non EU citizen (often met in the UK)who is already married or has used a fake identity and false documents - this is a form of rape by deception for we would never have married someone in a live relationship with a wife!!!! No cases are being prosecuted for Bigamy and/ or rape and the CPS keep moving the goal posts. Our feeling is that it is the CPS Guidance in these cases that keeps changing and not the actual law. So we are very interested in Private Prosecutions and would love to speak to you. www.immigrationmarriagefrauduk.co.uk

this is my suggestion for a legal strategy. identify him . his route then is to sue you for defamation or libel, in which case the burden of proof is firmly on him. ie he has to disprove that he raped you. another advantage is more women may come forward when he is identified. aside of this suggestion I dont know if theres any law specifically against naming rape defendants---but he isnt one -ie thanks to the cps it will be inpplicable. ps bethnal green police are vile and corrupt.

Emily, you were one of my first childhood friends back in Brooklyn. I am so sorry to hear that this happened to you, and that the process of finding justice has been so appallingly mishandled. I cant even imagine. What you are doing is so courageous and so tough..you are truly shining a light and giving other women strength. Keep fighting
