Derek McCormick has been part of the Bishop Kelly Family for over 20 years as a student, teacher and coach. Derek currently teaches Government and AP Government at Bishop Kelly, is the Head Girls Basketball Coach and assists with the Baseball program.

On Monday, March 21st, Derek went into the doctor to get a check up as he was not feeling well and didn't have any energy to do simple tasks. After several tests on Monday and Tuesday, Derek was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia. Adult acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is a type of cancer in which the bone marrow makes abnormal myeloblasts (a type of white blood cell), red blood cells, or platelets. Derek's Oncologist feels optimistic that with urgent and aggressive chemotherapy treatment, the cancer cells can be eliminated from Derek's body and get him back to a full recovery. Derek is currently undergoing chemotherapy and has received a number of blood transfusions. Derek's blood count is improving but still a long ways from normal.

Derek will face a series of treatments over the next several months and although we are all very optimistic about his recovery, he will need all the love, support and prayer that we can possibly give him to help get him through this.

To help offset medical costs, we are trying to raise money to help him and his family focus on recovery and not be overwhelmed with financial stress. Please consider donating even a small amount to help, every little bit helps. Thank you!
