Hi, my name's Tom, and this year I'm going to Juilliard... with a bit of help.
I'm over the moon to be able to say I've just been offered a place at the prestigious Juilliard School in New York, which is widely considered as – arguably – the best performing arts school in the world. It's where the likes of Kevin Spacey, Robin Williams, Viola Davis and William Hurt honed the skills of their trade.
I've acted with the Television Workshop in Nottingham for the past 9 years, and with the National Youth Theatre for 3. They've both given me amazing opportunities to get vast and varied experiences. But this year I decided that an intense, classical training is just what I need next in order to be better equipped for this tough industry. And where better to do just that? After a series of self-taped audition pieces, 2 trips to New York and a total of 5 audition rounds; out of over 2,000 applicants, I was offered 1 of 9 places on one of the world's most sought after BA actor-training programs.
The catch? It's crazily expensive.
Juilliard have given me a very generous scholarship of $25,000/year towards my tuition fees. However, the school have estimated my remaining costs at a further $40,000 (£28,000) per year, for the remaining fees, books and supplies, transportation and travel, and health insurance (yup... no NHS!).
I'm working really hard in order to save, attempting to secure long term sponsorship, and my family will help me where they possibly can. But the money raised through GoFundMe could literally be the difference in whether or not I can accept my place, by covering the previously mentioned living costs for an entire year!
This amazing 4 year course is due to begin on 11th September 2016. The first year's fees are due a month before on 11th August. So time is running out, and every single penny counts towards sending a lad from Nottingham all the way to New York, to work with and learn from the very best. So friends, family and vaguely interested strangers, if you can spare it, my gratitude would be beyond measure.
