Bookstore Needs Your Help

$11,331 of $75k goal

Turn of the Corkscrew, Books & Wine has been opened for one year now.  For several months, we were going in the right direction. It was gratifying to see our hard work, commitment and long hours adding to our success.  But then in May 2016, street closures, due to major construction in the Village, turned the tide for us in a negative way. Customers told us they couldn't get to us due to the mess our street was in. Attendance at our events dropped off considerably due to street closure and lack of parking.  For one  week we had no sidewalk  and potential customers hesitated to walk across the  plank to get to our store!  Our business plan did not account for this major interuption in business, which is why we are asking for your help...because we need your help! If we don't get some funding , our doors will have to be closed and the community will lose an independent bookstore that is a great place to gather, and where we host many programs, including author discussions, workshops, and the very successful Creative Writers Camp which we hosted this summer for 18 young talented writers.
We, Peggy and Carol, are co-owners who put our homes on the line and invested $100,000 of our own money to secure a loan for startup. We did this because we believe in this venture and not because we expected to get rich.  However, we never foresaw something as unexpected as street construction to hinder our progress towards success.
We have many events scheduled in the coming months and need to order books for them, as well as books and other merchandise for the holiday season, while a sizeable monthly loan payment looms over us.  We have been very grateful for the warm welcome that we received from Rockville Centre and the surrounding communities.  Our customers have been very loyal and supportive and we love being part of the community. Therefore, if you like what we bring to the South Shore of Long Island, won't you please help us keep our doors open?  In order to do this, we are trying to raise $75,000 to get us back on our feet. Many of you have asked us not to leave the community...please help us stay by contributing to our fund and spreading the word.

It’s been about three months since we started our GoFundMe campaign https://www.gofundme.com/2tph29zy in order to keep us afloat after dealing with months of street/sidewalk closure hindering patrons from reaching our bookstore/café. (And, yes, I do mean months!) Neither Peggy nor I wanted to do the fundraising campaign, but if we hadn’t, we would have lost everything. Therefore, we want to thank those who contributed to the campaign or patronized our store or both. We know that there are so many worthy causes and ours wasn’t life or death, but an investment in your community. Even though the fundraising has come to a standstill, it is our hope that we will continue to get your support by coming to our events, buying books from us, patronizing our café, hosting your book discussion groups, workshops, etc. here. We have heard countless times that Turn of the Corkscrew, Books & Wine has brought something refreshing to the South Shore of Long Island. Therefore, please consider stopping in to see all that we continue to offer. Check out what we have scheduled for 2017 thus far. http://turnofthecorkscrew.com/events/ Meanwhile, we cannot wait to see you walk through our door!

Of course we know getting to our goal is an uphill, if not impossible, battle. We do hope, though, that if you believe in shopping local, having a place to bring your kids for fun events and discovering new books by a knowledgeable staff, please help keep us in business. We’re good for the community! (Attached is a photo of a recent girl scout troop visiting our store for a creative writing session, along with snacks and laughs.)

Here’s a link to a follow-up article that came out this week:

If for some reason, you didn't get a personal thank you from us on Facebook, please know that it wasn't intentional. There's a lot to keep up with. The good news is that News 12 interviewed us about how the construction has been hurting our business where we've lost thousands of dollars. And Patch.com is running an article as well. Meanwhile, please know that we are doing everything in our power to get past this roadblock. (The attached photo is just one small sample of what we had to deal with over the last few months.)
From this summer...
