Fundraiser for Haiti Volunteer Trip

Donation protected
This coming February, I will be traveling with a group of volunteers taking part in a medical mission to the Les Cayes Region of Haiti through a small non-profit organization known as BEM Haiti. To support the mission, I am kindly asking for donations in order to provide the necessary medical supplies for the trip. Here's some info about the trip:

 Why Haiti?

o Haiti is the poorest country in the western hemisphere. Eighty percent of the population live below poverty line.

o Even before the major earthquake back in 2010 that took the lives of >200,000 of its inhabitants, the country had among the lowest living standards, with average life expectancy at 50 years for men, 53 years for women.

o Very few have access to clean water, resulting in the majority of children harboring water borne illnesses.

o Access to healthcare is extremely low and health insurance as we know it does not exist in Haiti. Limited access of sanitation makes health conditions even worse.
Les Cayes and its surrounding area have further constraints relative to healthcare because of its distance from the capital. One hospital does exist, but its facilities are inadequate and most inhabitants of the region are too poor to have access to the care offered.

 Was Les Cayes affected by Hurricane Matthew?

o Les Cayes was among the areas hit hardest by Hurricane Matthew when it made landfall on October 3, 2016 as a category 4 hurricane. As of October 8, 2016, Hurricane Matthew was responsible for as many as 800 deaths in Haiti.

o The biggest concerns in the aftermath of the hurricane are long term flooding, homelessness resulting from the widespread destruction and devastation of crops

 What happens on the medical missions?

o A small group of us including doctors, nurses and assistants like myself will go out to a different village each day to see all men, women and children who come for medical care.

o On an average day, as many as 150 patients will be seen with conditions ranging from simple colds to severe infections, malaria, untreated chronic illness and everything in between. We will be there for one week and expect to see 600-700 patients total.

o We dispense medications like antibiotics, Tylenol, ibuprofen, blood pressure medicine and diabetes medicine, as well as provide a lot of TLC

 What will the money be used for?

o We need between $3000-$4000 to pay for the medicine and other supplies that we take with us for this specific mission. Additionally, we reserve some money to enable the sickest of patients that we see to seek more advanced care at the local hospital.

When the trip rolls around, I will be keeping up a photo/writing blog for any/all interested to follow along.

Any donations are greatly appreciated. Please feel free to reach out with more questions, share this page, and check out the BEM website . Thanks for reading!
