Bucky's Survival

Bucky is the Maltese I bought 11 years ago to donate to the Spring Branch Middle School auction. The second the boys and I got him in the car, we knew we’d have to keep him. We picked him out of about 20 other puppies. This was our fate. I bought another dog and a friend of mine was supposed to watch him until the auction. She had to keep him. Yet another puppy went to another friend who had to buy him at the auction. And so they were the 3 Musketeers – afternoon playdates, carpool pick-up line, etc.

The boys and I never had a dog before – we had no idea about all the love and devotion that was to come. We still fight over who Bucky gets to sleep with when they are home from school. They lose every night – I can’t sleep without him.  They never call home without asking about Bucky. He has adapted to the many homes we have lived in – in a split second. As long as we are there, he’s home.

A couple of weeks ago he had 2 accidents in the house and although his behavior was totally normal – he has never stopped acting like a puppy – Pat and I brought him to the vet.

He was very sick. Bayou City Vets sent us to Gulf Coast Veterinary Hospital, often referred to as Gold Coast, which has a great reputation for providing the finest care, and is also very expensive. They ran many tests, and determined that the problem was in his gall bladder and bile ducts, as well as having stones in his bladder. They didn’t know if he’d survive the surgery but we had no choice. We had to try. They removed his gall bladder, stones and resected his bile ducts – which turned out not to have a mass and they were able to flush them out.  His surgery was on Friday, September 30th. As we were warned, he developed pneumonia and severe pancreatitis.

We had no idea if he’d make it or not – on a day-to-day basis.  But he is hanging in there and slowly healing. Today, he actually ate some baby food on his own.  We go over every day for visits – and he is at the point now where he fights to not let us put him back in the cage.

I’m still scared to death – but I think he’s turned the corner and is going to make it. Many, many prayers have been said in his name!

So far, his care has cost us over $15,000, and I anticipate at least another $5,000. I am reaching out to you all to see if you can help us through this.  Our well has run dry. I know with all your help, we will be able to bring him home again – to make us chase him around the house, brush his own teeth (he does), and cuddle with us all on our pillows.

He is 7 pounds of adorable, unconditional love. Thank you.
