My name is Kevin Michael Lombardi, the current Executive Director of YourStory International, a Massachusetts-based non-profit 501c(3) with active operations in Haiti.

Last week Hurricane Matthew made landfall in southwestern Haiti, dropping an estimated 40 inches of rain with winds up to 145 miles per hour on the community we serve in Leogane.
The damage so far has been devastating, most of the families in the neighborhoods served by YourStory International have been living in temporary plywood houses they received after the earthquake--transitional dwellings that, at 6 years old, cannot stand up to hurricane-force winds or flooding. Unfortunately the record-breaking floods have washed away the homes of many of the people we serve as the streets in Leogane and the surrounding areas have turned to rivers. The displaced are now hungry and in need of immediate aid.

Despite the destruction thus far, we are pleased to say that YourStory International was positioned perfectly to respond to the disaster. The night of the storm our country director Marie-Flore St. Fleur Lombardi began admitting local people to stay temporarily at our Pont Morel Compound to wait out the storm in a safe, secure and dry place.

Now that we have ensured the safety of as many of the people we serve as possible our next concern will be the immediate needs, mainly clean and safe food and water.
The people we serve are already at increased risk for malnutrition and infectious disease. Consequently, our initial response has focused on the distribution of safe and clean food and water. As the storm has subsided our efforts will have pivoted towards supporting locally-led relief teams to repair houses, and helping the poorest families in our area rebuild thier lives through education and business grants.
