Hi my name is Dan.

Last July my mother passed away. Around that time I began to have some abdominal pain and other issues. Thinking that I was just struggling with the loss of my mother, I assumed it was just stress causing my discomfort. Even though I lived out of state, my mother and I were very close. We spoke on the phone several times per week. She was my biggest supporter. My dad passed away a month before I was born, so she is really all I knew as a parent.

On February 19, 2016, I was stunned when I was diagnosed with stage 4 Colon Rectal Cancer. I have gone through 6 months of chemotherapy and have been fighting every day to get better.

I was employed and remained on the job through treatments and other issues associated with the cancer. I was able and faithfully continued to do my work, even from my hospital bed. I was told over and over by the owner of the company that all would be fine and they were 100% behind me. Just 12 hours before a surgical procedure to check if the cancer had moved to the bladder, I received a phone call from my boss. He said that the company wasn't making "enough" money and that I was terminated, effective immediately. He said he had no complaints about my work, nothing along those lines at all, just “we're letting you go”. I understand a business decision, but the timing was not the best. Unfortunately, this “business decision” means that I lose my health insurance. No one will want to hire and insure a 48-year-old man with cancer. My only option is to go on Cobra insurance which is VERY expensive. I don’t know how I am going to be able to pay the insurance premium, co-pays, medication, deductibles and anything else that is related to the treatment of my cancer.

Fortunately, I got encouraging news from the biopsy. The tumor did not spread to my bladder! Thank God! Surgery to remove the tumor is going to be scheduled soon. When first discovered, it was so large that they could not get in there to attempt to remove it. It has shrunk with chemo!! After surgery, I will return for additional chemo to make sure all cancerous tissue has been beaten and destroyed.

I've never asked for financial help in my life. This is honestly uncomfortable for me to ask for help. I struggle daily to cope and deal with the “deadly” diagnosis of CANCER. Some days are harder than others. I go through such an array of emotions as I go through this fight, but I made two decisions early on that I'm holding onto.

#1 I will beat this cancer. I have no doubt that I will overcome this.

#2 I love my family and close friends and I want to share time with them for as long as I can.

If there are excess funds raised, they will be donated to a cancer patient in a similar situation.

Thank you for reading this and I appreciate anything that you can do to help!!!!
Trying to keep my sense of humor,
Dan
