Update- Kristen has been back in the hospital now since the beginning of December and transport is being arranged for her to transfer to Boston Children's Hospital. Please the the most recent update for more details.
I had the pleasure of meeting the Reichweins in 2001. Kristen was 3 and Megan was just a baby. Kristen was born with a heart defect that required several open heart surgeries as a baby. Because of those surgeries, her anatomy is different from everyone else's. This has led to many complications, as well as the need for many medicines, doctors visits, and her recent heart surgeries. At the end of August, she had heart surgery and was in the hospital for a week. After returning home, she had several doctors appointments and emergency room visits, and was admitted to UVA hospital in mid September. She and Tina have spent the last month in that room. Brad & Megan visit several times a week.
Tina has homeschooled Megan and Kristen for several years. Kristen benefits from homeschooling because of her need for special education as well as her medical needs. Tina had to give up her job watching kids part time to care for Kristen and homeschool the girls. Brad works 3 jobs to support the family.
The experience has been draining mentally, physically, and financially for the family. Tina rarely leaves Kristen's side. Brad & Megan drive back & forth to spend as much time at the hospital as they can. Their expenses include gas for the trip back & forth, eating out, hotel for Megan & Brad, as well as countless medical expenses. This hospital stay, as well as the surgery and stay in August, will put a huge financial strain on the family.
Most of all, the family wants Kristen to be happy and healthy. She misses her 5 dogs, her family, and sleeping in her own bed. She enjoys playing games, coloring, and playing with Barbies.
