4-year-old Amber Athwal's Support

$72,091 of $1 goal

Raised by 1,209 people in 29 months
I don't even know where to begin with our story.
My 4-year-old daughter, Amber, went with her dad to see a dentist for her routine dental check up. The dentist referred her on to a specialist who he claimed was the best in Edmonton.

On arrival, the specialist dentist saw Amber and told us there needed to be some work done on her teeth.  He told my husband that there had been a cancelation today and that he could do the procedure today. He asked if my daughter Amber had anything to eat today and my husband told the specialist that she had breakfast, however he said it's okay and carried on. He used general anesthetic for this procedure.

During the operation, Amber had a lack of oxygen to her brain and was rushed to the hospital right away. She has been in the hospital for nearly 4 weeks now (Since Sept. 7) and the MRI shows that Amber has been left with a brain injury. She is still unconsious and not responsive. We are waiting for her to recover.

She is in critical condition and fighting to stay with us. Each day is unknown and scary for us. I would appreciate any support you could give us. My husband and I have left our jobs so we could be with Amber 24/7. We are at the Children's Stollery Hospital in Edmonton, Alberta with Amber and we both would appreciate absoloutely any help you could offer. We want our little angel to recover. Any donation will be appreciated whole-heartedly. We are going through a very tough time at the moment.

Any help at all will be helpful please.

Thank you in advance for all your support. We can not appreciate it enough. Thank you.

Arsh

Hi Everyone,

Thank you so much for there continuous support. We are truly grateful for all the support we are receiving.

Amber is still at the Glenrose Rehab Centre. She is starting to response to a few commands, however she is still in a coma phase. She's not walking, speaking, or eating on her own yet.

We are not getting any answers as to why this happened to our Amber. The dental association and College is not giving us any answers.

I would like to take this moment and ask for support from all of you to help us possibly get answers or have our voice heard. I believe at the very least, we deserve to know exactly what happened to Amber.

If you are willing to help us, please email, mail or phone Alberta Dental Association & College at

We are extremely grateful for all the support. We are truly speechless and can't thank everyone enough. This time is very difficult for our family. We just wanted to write an update for everyone. Amber is still unconscious. She still isn't speaking or looking at us. She opens and closes her eyes spontaneously. She is currently at the Glenrose Rehabilitation Centre undergoing therapies. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts. We sincerely appreciate it.

Hello Arsh, A friend told me about what happened to your daughter and when I read your story on line it brought tears to my eyes. Almost four years ago my son suffered an anoxic brain injury from a strangulation accident at school, so like your daughter he did not receive oxygen to the brain for several minutes. The doctors told me the same thing - he will never walk, never eat by mouth, be in a wheelchair for the rest of his life and never see. He is now eating by mouth, trying to talk, walking with a special walker, and he can see! The first thing you need to do is to get your daughter into a hyperbaric oxygen chamber. DO NOT ask the doctors at the hospital - they will tell you it doesn't work. After my son had 40 treatments he started to smile and laugh. Please contact Gordon Ward at Canadian Hyperbarics - he has a clinic in the Edmonton General Hospital. His # is 403-588-1660. It is private but I may be able to help with the funding. Please message me through facebook and I can answer any of your questions. My heart goes out to you but remember there is HOPE! Kamila Kitzul

Sorry to hear this has happened to your little girl. Sending your family hope and strength at such a tragic time. You may want to consider looking into the use of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy which has been very successful with brain injuries including those of small children who have been involved in a drowning. It's helped them regain much more of their functions. https://www.thestar.com/news/gta/2013/10/14/jesse_arrigos_recovery_from_neardrowning_inspiring_others.html

Hi Arsh, I am so sorry to hear about your beautiful little child. I am a physician with special interest in methylation. Since I know the how anesthesia and nitric oxide gas given at dental office can adversely effect some people with particular SNP & deficiencies, I discussed the possibility of it happening in your daughter's case with the main researcher Dr. Ben Lynch. He agrees and suggested to get a few basic tests done to see if our suspicion in correct. Kindly request attending physician for labs to assess B12 , homocysteine, folate & Methionine levels. Please do get these labs done even if attending physician doesn't know why. These lab tests can provide a huge clue that, if positive, can save her life and speed up her recovery with right treatment. Please contact me at facebook so that I can provide the details along with medical evidence / explanation for treating physician. You can also directly reach Dr. Ben Lynch should you prefer to discuss the case history with him. With my heartfelt sincere prayers & much love, Rahat

Hi Everyone, let's take a stand and get answers for Amber! All it takes is a quick email, phone call or letter (See details in Raman's update)Let's take 5 minutes out of our busy schedules and do a good deed for someone in need. If we stick together as a team, we will find answers for Amber! Imagine if your 4 year old child has lost the ability to eat, walk or speak without assistance. These are basic human rights and if these have been taken away from her then we at the least deserve some answers as to WHY.

Andre Cadrin I am so sorry to hear about the unfortunate incident that happened to your daughter, and put her in a critical condition. I just saw the story today. I am devastated to hear this. Based on all the response, I don't know what her condition is like today. I would suggest to say a few 'Hail Marys' ,or better yet the full Rosary. The Blessed Immaculate Virgin Mary will intercede with her son, Jesus Christ (Son of God) to heal Amber. If the doctors can not cure her, only Jesus Christ can. It is worth the prayers to try. I pray for her as well. I am Roman Catholic. Many Miracles happen through the Most Blessed Virgin Mary. I am truly hoping for a cure or a Miracle for Amber. May God Bless you and your family. Andre

You should immediately contact the best lawyers in Alberta for a medical malpractice lawsuit and go for a huge settlement claim. I would say not less than $10 Million if not higher for the catastrophic injury cause to your child ... Once the matter is in the court Alberta Dental Association will start speaking as well. Pick the most experienced lawyer with a track record of winning such cases ... Most lawyers will take the case for % commission in final settlement and you have a very strong case. Go for it.!

Get better Amber. I'm sorry that this happened. My thoughts and prayers are with you during this time of healing and recovery. I don't have a lot to offer at this time. But for a special day out, I extend an invitation that I'd be more than happy to dona firehall tour, and a ride in a fire truck for Amber.

Gail Has anyone looked into 'pseudocholinesterase deficiency' Unaware of my husbands enzyme deficiency and the rareness of his experience which he had trying to come out of anesthesia it was only thanks to his doctors & staff that they were able to figure out why he could not start breathing again on his own. FYI: Pseudocholinesterase deficiency is a condition that results in increased sensitivity to certain muscle relaxant drugs used during general anesthesia, called choline esters. These fast-acting drugs, such as succinylcholine and mivacurium, are given to relax the muscles used for movement (skeletal muscles), including the muscles involved in breathing. The drugs are often employed for brief surgical procedures or in emergencies when a breathing tube must be inserted quickly. Normally, these drugs are broken down by the body within a few minutes of being administered, at which time the muscles can move again. However people with pseudocholinesterase deficiency may not be able to move or breathe on their own for a few hours after the drugs are administered. Affected individuals must be supported with a machine to help them breathe (mechanical ventilation) until the drugs are cleared from the body. I just heard about Amber on the news and it instantly took me back to our experience with my husband and his inability to breathe on his own after anesthesia because of his enzyme deficiency. Our thoughts and prayers are with Amber & her Family.
