Let's Help a Muslim!

Over 600 people I don't really know have friended me on Facebook. Only one of them has really become a friend. Ebrima Khan grew up in rural Gambia, one of the smallest and poorest of African countries. He is the youngest of 13 children and the only one in the history of his family to get an education. As a child, he walked many miles for it every day. He is going blind from an infection he got at the age of three. Eye Associates of New Mexico has agreed to treat him pro bono. A wealthy donor has agreed to cover his airfare. Now we just need funds to support him for the 8-12 weeks he needs to remain here for his treatment (consultation, two separate eye surgeries and follow up). I have been communicating with Ebrima over two years now. He is a caring, intelligent, highly motivated, fine young man. He would like to get a higher education in the UK or the US. He did complete his three-year School of Education program and began teaching till the pain, itching and loss of sight forced him to stop. He has returned to his rural village and family due to the expense of living in the city without income. For me, this is a rare opportunity to make a huge, desperately needed difference in the life of someone less fortunate. I invite you to join me in making a small or large donation to bring him here for the treatment he so dearly needs. If we don’t, he will probably languish in blind poverty for the rest of his life instead of advancing his education and benefiting his family, his country and the world as he is so capable of and motivated to doing. Ebrima has spent what little he has to go to scores of local healers. He recently traveled to a nearby country and gave his last bit of money and cell phone away to someone who promised he could help. Let’s truly help him by getting this done. Please contribute any amount that works for you, even if only a dollar. Every dollar will help. For full documentation, please click here . Please also consider reading more on the YouTube page. If I had the wherewithal, I would bring him here in a flash. Unfortunately, I don't. You can help. (As of yet, there is no M Foundation. Perhaps someday there will be.)

After a month-and-a-half via airmail, the ointment finally reached Ebrima yesterday in the Gambia. We will see how much it helps.

Ebrima's conditions turn out to be more complex than the original, simple Pterygium we thought it was. Attached is a letter from my Ophthalmologist, the Chairman of the Board. They want to start him on a medical ointment that they are in the process of sending him. I still hope and expect to bring him here after we see what the results of that will be.

We're getting close! Ebrima has his passport and official medical report. Now we're just waiting on the doctor at Eye Associates to schedule the dates to apply for the visa and purchase the airline ticket! For documentation, see www.mark-landau.com/edocs.htm

I just wrote this to the man in Gambia who is helping with this. (Ebrima once sacrificed his annual examination fee to save his life from malaria.) Do any of you have any reaction/feedback on this?

I'm thinking of something a bit outrageous to get us more attention.
It'll trigger some people and some might think it's offensive or disrespectful but it could help the campaign become more noticeable and increase search engine hits.
It came to me when I emailed a local newspaper (The Reporter) because I thought it might encourage them more to do an article on this.
And it's a bit of an in-your-face comment to those who are adding to the current wave of anti-Muslim sentiment.
The idea is to change the campaign name/headline to:
Adopt-a-Muslim
Forgive me, given the current tenor of things, I think it's hilarious and, if it takes off and goes viral, who knows, it could become an annual thing.
I do believe it could be media attention grabbing.
As a personally involved Muslim, what is your reaction to this?
And don't worry if you hate it or think it's awful. I'm asking for your honest opinion.

My opinion: I think adopt a muslim will do his cause more harm than good and also is infantilizing. On the plus side, your campaign is going well! Looks like you have enough or him to come over!

This is what Bruce MacLaren emailed me: "I like the Adopt-a-Muslim idea. It seems to me it can only help. “Adopt” is a powerful word for me. I like being able to ‘adopt’ even at our age." So definitely mixed feelings as I thought there would be. Thank you for your opinions. Any more?
