Support for Kevin Chap & his Family

Many of you know Kevin Chap, a great person in the Houston community.  We, his friends, are setting this up for him.  Kevin and his family are in need of your support.

Kevin Chap was randomly shot on the morning of September 26, 2016 in the Houston shooting by a gunman while Kevin was driving to work.   Kevin suffered a gun shot to the neck and somehow managed to crawl out of his vehicle to the intersection where he laid helpless until a police officer rescued him and carried him to EMS.  From there he was transported to Ben Taub hospital, all the while he had the awareness to hold pressure on his wound site. The staff there quickly triaged him and recognized that his internal jugular vein had completely obliterated, but somehow the bullet did not puncture any vital organs as it traveled into his neck, then through his lungs, and finally lodging in his rib cage.  Doctors there quickly performed an emergency chest tube insertion procedure which saved his life.

Here is an UPDATE:  Kevin seemed to be recovering well the following day, however, overnight he had a major set back.  He became tachycardic, febrile, hypotensive and weak.  His blood had dropped to a very low level and he was in need of an emergency transfusion. Furthermore, he was rushed to interventional radiology to further investigate the cause of his bleeding.  Once there, the doctors found two intercostal arteries that were hemorrhaging out.  They were able to stop the bleeding using coils and prevent further damage.  From there, Kevin underwent a video assisted thoracotomy to drain the over 2 liters of blood that had been accumulating in and around his lungs.  His procedure went well.  But, his prognosis remains guarded as his blood count has still yet to stabilize.  Right now, Kevin is still very weak because of all the blood loss and is in constant excruciating pain from all the surgeries, lines, and tubes placed in him. However, those who know Kevin knows he is a fighter, and Kevin will fight.

Kevin is a husband and a father of three little children.  Kevin was the provider for his family.  Due to this unexpected and horrific incident, Kevin has and continues to suffer tremendous hospital costs from the long hospital stay, the procedures done on him, and the medical care, and he will endure lost wages from not being able to work.  Many people have the wrong impression that since Kevin is a physician that he will be able to cover all these costs and losses incurred due to the shooting event.  That is simply not the case as Kevin, including many physicians’ insurance plans, are far from adequate and in the untimely and unfortunate event, such like this, Kevin and his family are incurring massive medical costs in which he must owe.  Kevin is stressing so much over this right now.  Please pitch in whatever you can to help Kevin and his loving family out.  This is the last thing that Kevin should worry about now.

Kevin told us yesterday night that he has to get better as soon as possible to be able to work as soon as possible to be able to pay back all his medical costs and not be a burden to his family.  This made our hearts ache!  Please help Kevin and his family with whatever contribution you can.   The entire Houston community and America stand behind Kevin.  Thank you so much for your support.
