Save Montreal Pitbulls

$61,027 of $5,000 goal

Raised by 1,710 people in 7 months
We are One Last Chance Animal Rescue Team, a volunteer group working in connection with multiple pounds and animal shelters across Montreal and surrounding areas. Our goal is to save as many viable lives as possible by getting animals that are at risk of euthanasia out of shelters, and into approved, foster based rescue organizations.   All of this takes a lot of time, passion, dedication and coordinating.

Since April 2016 alone, 503 cats, 242 dogs, (27 which were pitbulls) and 40 exotic animals (for a total of 785 animals, not counting wildlife, adoptions and claimed) were transferred out of Montreal area pounds and into reputable rescues in Montreal, Ontario, Nova-Scotia, Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta.

It has been a team effort; with the help of dedicated volunteers from foster-based rescues, rescue coordinators, and animal rescue transport organizations such as Freedom Drivers, this was made possible. We have worked tirelessly on rehoming pitbull type dogs, so much so that our efforts have picked up media traction, such as CTV News ( http://regina.ctvnews.ca/mobile/stray-pit-bulls-get-new-leash-on-life-in-saskatchewan-1.3049699), The Gazette ( http://montrealgazette.com/life/freedom-drivers-help-unwanted-animals-find-the-road-to-a-new-life), CJAD News, CBC, Global News, Leader Post, Mtl Dog Blog, and The Dodo .

On Tuesday, September 27th, the unthinkable happened:  the Montreal city council voted in favour of changes to its animal control bylaw, passing with a vote of 37-23, the second most sweeping Breed Specific Legislation in the Country.  The community of Montreal is distraught, as it opposes such a bylaw which has been a failure both historically and scientifically. As of October 3rd 2016, no one in the city of Montreal is entitled to adopt a Pitbull, meaning that all Pitbull or “Pitbull-type” dogs that are stray, in shelters, pounds, or foster-based rescue organizations are at risk of euthanasia – regardless of their docile temperament.

Most of the animals that are saved come with pull fees, transportation fees and extensive vet fees; and this is entirely covered through fundraising, donations and adoption fees. With the overwhelming number of Pitbulls whose lives are now being threatened, OLC now, more than ever need your help and donations to offset some of the transportation and vetting expenses required to ensure these adorable and innocent dogs' safety.

These innocent animals have rescues and foster homes waiting for them across Canada – but we need to get them there, with your help. In considering jumping on board to save lives, please remember that by doing so, you are not only being the voice for Pitbulls. You are being the voice for ALL animals in need of homes, whether cats, dogs, rabbits, birds, etc... This is for the dog that cuddles you every night, the cat that passed away in your arms, the stray colony that seeks shelter under your balcony, the bunny you could never imagine eating, and all the other animals yourself, or a loved one, cares so deeply for. They without a doubt give you a reason to go on, let’s come together and do the same for them.

Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for helping us help them in such a time of need. We truly appreciate your efforts in helping us make change.

Please do not hesitate to contact us, we look forward to speaking wit you.

HUGE news friends!!!! One Last Chance has partnered with Montreal SPCA to use the funds we have collected during this campaign to assist with low cost vetting and obtaining the proper permits so that families can keep their beloved family members!!!

Montreal SPCA will perform the vetting and screen individuals for financial need and, thanks to all of you, a portion of the money we raised, will go to fund this initiative.

OLC has been invited to attend the Montreal SPCA Gala on November 10th, where we will present them with our donation cheque.

The remainder of the funds raised, will continue to assist cover transport costs, to help pitbull type dogs get out of province.

We, at OLC, would like to take this opportunity to thank this amazing community of animal lovers who have helped us achieve the unthinkable. With the money we have raised to help these dogs, families and rescues, we have truly made a difference.

We will not be accepting any further donations at this time, as we believe, with your help, we have raised enough money to help save or rehome so very many lives.

Thank you from all of us at OLC!

A lot has been going on behind the scenes since our last pup-date. With the help of Freedom Drivers and WestJet, we have been able to move 4 more pitbulls to safety.

As expected, the City of Montreal went back to court to appeal the decision to put a hold on implementing the bylaw passed by city Council. The courts have ruled, that they will allow the appeal to proceed. This does not bode will for our pitbull type dog friends. Let's hope that the original hold stays true, and these loving family pets, are not targeted.....for the time being!

Friends and supporters.....the City of Montreal was back in court this week appealing the hold on implementing the new bylaw coming into effect.

CBC reporter Steve Rukavina is live tweeting updates from the proceedings. The City is fighting hard to uphold their position....let's keep our fingers crossed that the judge in this case sees reason and rules on the side of the dogs!

Hi Lindsay Moss-Frangie. Please join our Facebook page and have a look at all the work we have been doing (and not just for the Pitbulls). You can see this is not a scam. Also, please ask our local SPCA in Montreal about us or any rescue in the area. We have been all over the news (Global TV, CTV, The Dodo, etc.) in the past month as well. Perhaps you should have done your homework.

Thank you for investing so much of yourselves into this. Please document your work and know that we will continue to support you and all of those working with you on this courageous effort. With admiration and love from Chicago, IL.

The MSPCA says not to donate to anyone other than them because there are very few pits in the two shelters and they wee already helping them. I will donate my money to them. What if this gets overturned? I feel like these quick fundraisers after bans play on heartstrings of people to donate. But they themselves said not to donate to anyone yet because court is Monday and one shelter only has a handful of pits and the other has none

I'd be very careful...I can't find a single mention of "one last chance animal rescue (team or otherwise). There is a "last chance rescue"...based out of British Columbia. I have a feeling someone is playing on people's empathy...and have come out $10,000 ahead. Even the articles they've added on, say NOTHING about this particular group. If you want to send money, might I suggest the SPCA. Especially since they are creating a lawsuit against the city of Montreal to appeal this decision

This is absolutely ridiculous and unfair! They'll be bites from dogs of all sizes, small, medium, large or extra large. It's not the dogs fault but of the owners! You just don't hear of smaller dogs biting because of their size. It's actually been proven in many areas that smaller dog bites outweigh bigger dog bites, so, why not ban all of those breeds!?

Joanne Duffy, Jennifer Brewer, Lindsay Moss and anyone else that think she this is a scam. Get real. Do your research for gods sake. Look up OLCART on Facebook for one. They are real and have been saving dogs way before this Bull Shit Law. This is Canada and we are with SPCA, and work with other other shelters where hundreds of dogs need to get out to so they can have their lives saved. If you love animals, then donate your time to transport or money to help someone else transport them all to safety.

Lisa & Lee-Ann - if you don't feel comfortable donating, don't. There is no one with a gun to your head. As for the people who have donated - they have clearly felt comfortable with the organization in which they are giving their monies too. The average animal can require funds of 300+ dollars to get it safely from point A to B. 60,000/300 = help for 200 animals. Sure this may seem like a lot of money, and it is - but it also really isn't. Get your heads out of your butt, and go find a real gofundme scam to leave your hasty comments on.

I am overjoyed to see, at this moment, over 33K to help these magnificent dogs. I can't believe that in 2016 such ignorance exists to believe banning and killing these dogs is acceptable. Put forth legislation to mandate human training before being allowed to adopt ANY dog. There are far too many people who have no understanding of dog psychology. They are the reason for dog aggression. I would bite too if treated the way so many dogs are treated. God bless the people rescuing these dogs! I hope the donations exceed $50K.

JoAnne Duffy - I can assure you 100% that this is not a scam as I have been volunteering with this and other rescue groups based out of Montreal for 5 years now. In addition to the SPCA, there are many other privately owned pounds that are for profit pounds...meaning they are out to make money...that are not affiliated with the SPCA and that I can tell you have pit bulls in them. So before you decide to come onto this totally legit page, with volunteers that work tirelessly to save these animals, please do a little more research. I would invite you to take a look at their Facebook page where you will see the many dogs that have been saved this year alone...and perhaps you might take your unfounded remarks back. Thank you.
