Dear friends and acquaintances of Karen Van Horn,
My name is Lynn Jefferson, Karen's friend and coworker at The Daily Herald. I've been asked by many of you what can we do to support Karen and her family during their recent loss. We've decided that the best way to help her is collect money that she can put towards her sister, Shayla's unexpected funeral expenses.
Shayla Martin, 52, was classy and sweet, with a taste for the finer things. She spent decades selling dresses and makeup at the Macy’s department store at Cascade Mall in Burlington. On Friday, Sept. 23, at 6:52 p.m., her life was tragically cut short by a man who opened fire in the cosmetics department killing 5 people.
Her sister, Karen, described her as being so sweet, very independent and wanting to make her own way. She didn’t want to rely on anyone else. Shayla loved gymnastics and dance when she was young. As a teenager she worked at restaurants her parents had operated in Mount Vernon and Everett.
She was an avid reader, regularly devouring two or three books a week. She also had a practical streak. Her sister recalled she liked the finer things in life, yet wasn't above going to Value Village. Her taste didn’t always fit her pocketbook, but she had that special magic of always making it work.
Tragedy has struck this family three times in the last 10 months with the sudden death of another of Karen’s sisters, Christy, on Nov. 15, 2015, and her father’s passing after battling cancer later that same year in December.
I've chosen to use Go Fund Me as the means to collect the donations because it's a secure and safe way to reach people in our network.
If you would like to support our efforts, any donation amount will help and be appreciated. While money could never replace the loss of a loved one, we can surely ease the financial burden for the family, giving them time to grieve. Let's try and raise this amount within the next two weeks so that when the expenses come they are prepared.
