BOUTIQUE FOR THE ELDERLY-ADAPTMART

Donation protected
Many older people have been self-sustaining members of society and have developed problems of adaption only at an older age.  Without support, accumulated interpersonal losses threaten the fulfilment of their daily living needs and life satisfaction.  The elderly is also likely to experience chronic conditions, physical degeneration and frailty as a result of the ageing process.  Adaptive clothing and home health aides are essential for the ease and comfort of these individuals especially those with chronic medical conditions.  Tasks that we take for granted like climbing up the stairs or simply changing clothes prove to be a hassle for some people. It bores a hole in one’s heart seeing their loved one experiencing such difficulty.

“My mother was recently diagnosed with arthritis.  So, you can imagine how so much of her life has changed.  Her doctor instructed her to replace her vast collection of high heeled shoes with comfortable flats.  She was devastated when she shared the news with me.  More so because she is struggling to find shoes which are suitable for her condition, yet fashionable enough to fit in to her lifestyle.  Most of the products she needs in order to cope with her condition are rare to find locally.  The market is currently served poorly and inconsistently by a patchwork of local pharmacies and distributors.  Our last trip to South Africa, which was initially supposed to be for the purpose of shopping, was taken over by journeys to different pharmacies which did not even have what she was looking for.

My great grandmother is a joy to be around.  My grandmother is her primary caretaker and does all she can to ensure she is comfortable.  Two old women with deteriorating sight and advanced hearing loss.  I didn’t appreciate just how big a challenge this was until my grandma was away on a church trip and my great granny came to stay with us for a week.  Helping her change her clothes, with toileting and eating was such hard work.  I remember thinking how unfair it was that she wore house slippers all the time.  Shoes comfortable enough for her to wear are not only scarce, but also very expensive.  Filling her prescription and following her medication schedule seemed like an easy task but how forgettable it was for us, she would sometimes miss taking her medication because we forgot.

My family’s situation is a real and prevalent issue that almost no family in this country is immune to.  As Optimus Medical Group we share the burden, pain and universal emotion that other caretakers feel and experience, and as such we want to start up a specialist boutique to remedy the situation.”

Optimus Medical Group, trading as AdaptMart, is the brainchild of three young Batswana students and it aims to provide value for money and the fullest range of products possible, to meet the sensitive needs and expectations of senior citizens, and other disadvantaged individuals.   The name AdaptMart, was chosen because it implies a sense of vitality and relief, and these are two ideas that could easily be used to describe the purpose of our social enterprise start-up.

The idea for the business was initially generated in order to fill a void in the current market. AdaptMart will provide its clientele with a combination of products and services that is unlike anything offered thus far.  Our product line will address needs relating to mobility, bathroom safety, bedroom safety, poor vision, hearing loss, eating, personal care, seating, exercising, memory loss, home safety and others.  After establishing a market presence with this product niche, we will expand by getting rental space in different shopping malls across the country.

We are seeking additional funding for our project in order to be able to import our first stock.  We urge you to contribute to our cause.  Any pound that you may donate will go a long way into making our dream a soaring reality.  We intend to get our first stock in January 2017, hopefully by then we would have raised enough capital.

Your donation will bring us closer to our goal of £20 000.  We are happy to acknowledge your donation on our website and at our numerous platforms, (unless you prefer otherwise).  With your input, the start-up costs will be lower for us and that automatically translates into cheaper prices for our products in the market.  More Batswana will be able to afford these daily living aides.  This cause is partially inspired by our country’s (Botswana) vision 2016 pillars.

Thank you for your time and your on-going contributions to this cause.
